The Wildcats scored in the second quarter when David Long rumbled into the end zone from eight yards out. Jason Duff added the point-after kick, which proved to be the winning point.
The Cougars took over on their 14 with less than two minutes left in the game and marched 86 yards. Robert Jackson hauled in an 8-yard pass from Greg Entsminger as time expired and Covington went for two points to win the game. The run failed when the play was stopped a yard short of the end zone.

NEW CASTLE - Bath County kept its feet on the ground and ran over Craig County 21-0 in the Pioneer District season-opener for both teams.
Bath scored on drives of 70, 70 and 65 yards, getting rushing touchdowns from Jamie Carroll, Matt Williams and Billy Thomas.
All of Bath's 307 yards of offense came on the ground.
For Craig County, Chris Blankenship caught six passes for 87 yards.

INDEPENDENCE - Quarterback Chad Shaffner ran 58 yards for the winning score with 4 minutes, 47 seconds remaining to give the Blue Devils a victory in a back-and-forth game. Shaffner ran down the right sideline on an option keeper and cut back to miss a tackle on his way to the end zone.
The winning score came 40 seconds after Alleghany quarterback Chris Lucas ran 44 yards for his fourth touchdown of the night. Lucas ran for a 2-point conversion to tie the score 26-26.
Shaffner rushed for 191 yards on 10 carries. Halfback Ernie Pritchard gained 134 yards on 11 carries for Grayson County, which had 410 rushing yards. Pritchard scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter to tie the score at 18. Grayson took its first lead when Shaffner scored on a 64-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
Lucas had 181 yards on 14 carries and Solomon Dixon rushed 17 times for 122 yards for Alleghany, which had 314 yards on the ground.
Only two passes were completed in the game, one by each team.

RADFORD - A punishing ground game set the tone early and the Bobcats rolled past the Fighting Blues in the opener for both Timesland teams.
Larnell Lewis scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 1-yard run with 4:31 left in the opening quarter.
Lewis had a hand in the Bobcats' second touchdown 2:04 later, throwing a 35-yard scoring pass to Tremond Hale on an option play.
Radford built a 20-point halftime lead when Lewis scored on a 2-yard run with 1:12 to go in the second quarter.
The only scoring in the third quarter came on a 19-yard pass from Bobcats quarterback Foster Ridpath to wideout Eddie Waldron and Ridpath's two-point conversion run.
Lewis sealed the victory and capped a 106-yard rushing effort when he crashed into the end zone from 2 yards with 10:26 to go in the game.
The Fighting Blues, opening Bob Williams' final season as head coach, averted a shutout when D.J. Douglas scored on a 20-yard run and added a two-point conversion run with 8:21 to play in the game.
Marlon Wesley added 103 yards on 10 carries for Radford. Douglas finished with a team-high 65 yards on 13 carries for Parry McCluer.
