GEORGE WYTHE SURVIVES FOUL TROUBLE

George Wythe survived serious foul trouble Thursday night to whip county rival Fort Chiswell 68-49 in the girls' basketball opener for both teams. The Maroons fouled out five players and two others had four personals. If either one had fouled out, Wythe could have been left with only four players on the floor.

Sophomores Megan Johnson and Lisa Garland combined for 46 points to lead the Maroons. Trish Stuart scored 14 for Fort Chiswell in the non-district game.

Northside 43, Rockbridge County 30: In the consolation game of the William Byrd Tip-off tournament Thursday, Northside stopped Rockbridge County in a battle of Blue Ridge District rivals.

The Vikings (1-1) were led by Tanya Holmes with 16. Rockbridge County (0-2) was paced by Tonia Clements with 15.

Riverheads 26, Bath County 19: Tammy Hinton scored 14 points to lead Riverheads to the non-district, season opening victory over Bath County in Hot Springs.

Bath trailed by two points heading into the fourth quarter, but Hinton scored eight points in the finals quarter to seal the victory.

Melanie Woods and Christie Gillespie lead the Chargers with six points each.

Magna Vista 64, Gretna 41: Tanesia Kellam scored 15 points and had 13 rebounds to lead the Warriors (3-0) to their third straight victory in the Tunstall Tip-Off Tournament. Kellam was named the most valuable player of the round-robin tournament.

Gretna finished the tournament 1-2.

Rural Retreat 60, Grayson County 20: Rural Retreat, a Group A Region C tournament participant last year, picked up where it left off with the rout of the Blue Devils in the season opener for both teams.

Rural Retreat's Tanya Tarter scored 13 of her 23 points in the fourth quarter as the Indians roared off to the big lead and never looked back. The Indians defense forced 27 turnovers.

Shawsville 55, Bland 11: Sandy Burdette scored 13 and Robin Burdette added 10 as Shawsville easily won its non-district opener in Bland.
