STAUNTON RIVER ENDS LONG WINLESS DROUGHT

Staunton River snapped a 13-game losing streak by beating Altavista 28-15 Friday night in high school football.

The Golden Eagles, 0-10 a year ago, opened head coach Bob Gray's first season with a Seminole District victory behind Kevin Martin's 134 yards and three touchdowns.

Martin gave Staunton River (1-0, 1-0) the lead for a good with a 60-yard scoring run in the third quarter, and added touchdowns of 8 and 11 yards.

Jeff English scored on a 5-yard run for the Golden Eagles.

LYNCHBURG - The Terriers scored 34 straight points after falling behind 8-0 to post a season-opening win. Michael Berry scored on a 58-yard pass from Matt Bryant to put Byrd (1-0) ahead to stay.

The Terriers broke the game open after recovering a fumble on the 1-yard line when a long snap on a Lynchburg Christian punt attempt sailed high. Mike Stiff ran it in from there and Bryant scored the two-point conversion to make it 22-8.

Barry Myvett rushed for 179 yards and scored two touchdowns. Bryant completed 5-of-8 passes for 105 yards.

FLOYD - Jamie Warren had 18 carries for 134 yards and a touchdown to lead the Buffaloes to a non-district victory.

Peter Bucklin added scoring runs of 19 and 17 yards as Floyd County stuck primarily to its ground game. Jamie Warren added a 4-yard touchdown run and Jason Pratt hauled in a 48-yard scoring pass from Dwayne Hale to complete the scoring for the Buffaloes.

James River mounted a fourth-quarter rally to draw within three points. The Knights scored with 1:56 left to play, but Floyd County recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock.

Shahan Burrell had a 5 yard run and threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Tim Leflore on a halfback pass. Mark Whiting added a 39-yard touchdown run for James River.

LYNCHBURG - Marlon Tanner returned a punt 62 yards for one touchdown and a fumble 62 for another score to lead Heritage to the non-district romp over the Colonels.

Andre Austin and Mandell Hawkins had two touchdowns for the Pioneers.

Fleming lost two of five fumbles and was penalized 10 times for 83 yards. Phillip Barret was the lone bright spot for Fleming. He gained 42 yards on 13 rushing attempts.

BROOKVILLE - Jeff Landrum rushed for a pair of touchdowns and passed for another as the Bees dominated the Minutemen in a Seminole District game.

Brookville held Liberty to under 100 yards of total offense. Liberty never crossed the 50.

Brookville piled up 342 yards on the ground. Dewayne Rhodes gained 136 yards on 24 carries, and Shaun Morrison added 120 on only 13 attempts.

Bath scored on drives of 70, 70 and 65 yards, getting rushing touchdowns from Jamie Carroll, Matt Williams and Billy Thomas.

All of Bath's 307 yards of offense came on the ground.

For Craig County, Chris Blankenship caught six passes for 87 yards.

Keith Terry started the scoring burst with a 20-yard run for the Eagles, which led just 6-0 at halftime. Nathan Poole scored on a 5-yard run then hit wide receiver Brian Womack with a 9-yard scoring pass to put G.W. Danville up 28-0.

Halfback Theomone Brooks, who rushed 14 times for 76 yards, scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter. Tony Muse put Franklin County (0-1) on the board with a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter.
