WYTHE OPENS WITH A VICTORY

WYTHEVILLE - Senior running back Jeremy Wolford rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown for the George Wythe Maroons, who came away with a 20-6 non-district victory over the Fort Chiswell Pioneers on Friday in the opener for both Timesland teams.

Senior Teddy Eversole caught three passes for 76 yards, including a 25-yard throw from Rick Coeburn in the second quarter as George Wythe went up 14-0.

Galax 10

GALAX - Monty Matthews caught all three passes the Rockets completed Friday - two for touchdowns - as Bland County edged the Maroon Tide in the Mountain Empire District opener for both teams.

Quarterback David Lambert connected with Matthews for scores covering 15 and 75 yards. The first touchdown put Bland up 7-0 with 4:36 left in the first quarter; the second made it 14-0 with 11:48 to go in the second quarter.

For Galax, Randy Ashworth ran 24 times and gained 98 yards.

GW-Danville 28

Franklin County 7

DANVILLE - GW-Danville broke loose for 22 points in the third quarter to break open the game and went on to a non-district victory over Franklin County on Friday night.

Keith Terry started the scoring burst with a 20-yard run for GW, which led 6-0 at halftime. Nathan Poole scored on a 5-yard run, then hit wide receiver Brian Womack with a 9-yard scoring pass as the hosts went up 28-0.

Halfback Theomone Brooks, who rushed 14 times for 76 yards, scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter. Tony Muse put Franklin County (0-1) on the board with a 6-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
