HILLSVILLE - The strategy of pounding the ball inside to 5-foot-11 post players Tammy Cox and Jaclyn Dickens paid off as the Maroon Tide (3-0) won the Carroll County Tip-Off Tournament.
Cox and Dickens combined for 11 points in the third quarter, when Galax outscored the Cavaliers 18-9. The Maroon Tide went up by as many as seven late in the fourth quarter before Carroll (2-1) cut it to three with three seconds remaining on Bethany Hill's third 3-pointer. After a Cavaliers timeout, Dickens missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Keisha Ayers rebounded for Galax as time expired.
Cox had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Dickens scored 14. Carroll got 15 points from Hill and 10 from Marie Martin.
In the consolation game, Graham (1-2) beat Rocky Gap 53-49 behind 23 points from Angela Webb and 13 from Christie Maupin. Nancy Tupper led Rocky Gap (0-3) with 16 points and Amanda Clark had 15.
