A: It wasn't experimental pavement, just expensive pavement.
The results haven't made news because the surface is performing as expected.
Engineers called this a latex-modified slurry seal. It has proven durable and keeps its nonskid features under heavy traffic.
Because it's expensive, this surface isn't used everywhere. It does make economic sense in high-traffic areas, because repaving is needed less often.
This sealant also is used at a few spots on Interstates 81 and 77, and parts of Virginia 24 in Roanoke County, the Department of Transportation said.
"We're satisfied," a department spokesperson said.
U.S. 460 bridge Q: When will work be completed on the U.S. 460 bridge over the Norfolk Southern tracks at the Montgomery County line? After the next election?
M.O.
A: Sooner than that.
Three of the four lanes are open, and the last one needs a couple of days' work for marking the lanes on new pavement. With good weather, it might get done this week.
Replacing these bridge decks has taken about a year, but apparently that's been caused partly by unfavorable weather and the need to keep costs down.
On the surface, elections didn't have anything to do with the delays.|
Market Building flags
Q: Do the flags on the front and rear of the City Market Building have any significance? Do they represent any countries?
L.V., Roanoke
A: Their significance is decorative.
Those two rows of bright colors were chosen because they looked good, and for the purpose of drawing attention to the building. None of them is a national flag, the building's management company said.|
