POSEY JONES, an agriscience teacher at Blacksburg Middle School, is the 1994 winner of the Virginia Ideas Unlimited Contest sponsored by the Virginia Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association.
Jones won for his development of modular learning centers. His agriscience students studied with 5 different centers in a seven-week period: plant and soil, agricultural design and construction, aquaculture, animal science and computer agriscience.
DAN SWAFFORD, an agricultural education teacher at Christiansburg High School, was the 1993 Virginia winner and went on to become the 1994 region VI winner of the National Idea Unlimited Contest sponsored by the National Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association.
Swafford's entry was a computer program designed to help students keep financial and production records. He will be honored at the association's convention in Dallas in December.
Artist Barbara Capps and the New River Arts Council are forming a CHILDREN'S ART CLUB for children ages 8-18 to learn more about art techniques, displays, and business dealings.
The club will organize meetings and classes and help children display their work in shows, competitions and galleries.
"Some of these kids have exceptional skills and they need and deserve recognition," says Capps.
Artwork created by area children is already on display in the lobby of Marshall Overstreet's The Sportscar Clinic on Franklin Street in Christiansburg. Gallery hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday - Friday. Admission is free.

The Christiansburg High School Site-Based Committee will hold a PUBLIC HEARING Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium to discuss the presence of non-curriculum-related student clubs and organizations at school.
Those unable to attend may submit written comments to the committee by Sept. 20.

The Appalachian Teachers Network will hold its annual conference Saturday, Sept. 24 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Heth Hall on the Radford University campus.
Conference workshop topics include Appalachian literature and linguistics, banjo history, Scottish and Celtic influences on Appalachia and a study of mines in Floyd County. The workshops will focus on how to incorporate local historical information into the classroom.
The keynote speaker will be Gurney Norman, Appalachian author, storyteller and critic.
The conference fee is $20. Lunch will be provided. The registration deadline is Sept. 16.
Registration will be coordinated by the Radford University Department of Continuing Education.

The Virginia Tech Department of Entomology is offering two one-credit GRADUATE COURSES for kindergarten through sixth grade teachers this fall semester.
The courses, "Entomology for Elementary Teachers" and "Hands-on Insect Activities for Elementary Education," meet Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. from Sept. 15- Oct. 13 and includes one Saturday field trip.
The courses qualify as recertification credit. Registration will be coordinated by the entomology department. Enrollment is limited.

The Radford High School Band will begin to enjoy its new rehearsal and practice rooms this year as well as new equipment and storage all provided by fund raising campaigns by the band boosters.
Again this year in order to keep students from spending valuable rehearsal time on fund raising, the Radford High School Band Boosters are asking for donations to purchase more uniforms and a new sound system to accommodate the growing band.
Contributors may choose from four levels of annual membership that come with different benefit packages.
The Radford Chamber of Commerce Education Support Committee will give a new home to your SECONDHAND COMPUTER EQUIPMENT with homebound students or teachers with special needs in the Radford City School Division.
The committee will give receipts for tax purposes in exchange for equipment.
