ROANOKE VALLEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS

Home sales in the Roanoke Valley rebounded in August after a slow July, but it wasn't enough to offset the lagging year.

The Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors reported that 382 houses were placed under contract last month. That represents a jump of 53 percent from 249 homes sold in July, but it was an improvement of only 0.79 percent compared with 379 in August 1993.

For the first eight months of the year, real estate agents have sold 2,837 houses. That represents a decline of 5.8 percent from 2,837 for the same period last year.
