One week after the Minnesota Timberwolves hired Bill Blair as their new head coach, the team on Tuesday announced the addition of assistant coach Mike Schuler.
Blair and Schuler both used to be the head basketball coach at VMI, Schuler from 1970-72 and Blair from 1973-76.
Schuler, 53, an assistant with the Sacramento Kings last season, spent three seasons as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers and two more with the Los Angeles Clippers, compiling a 179-159 overall record.
``We are excited to have a man the quality of Mike Schuler join our staff,'' Blair said in a prepared statement. ``Having been a head coach in this league, Mike gives us a unique insight into many areas.''
Schuler entered the NBA in 1981 and served with Blair as an assistant to Larry Brown on the New Jersey Nets for two seasons. In 1983, Schuler joined Don Nelson's staff in Milwaukee.
Schuler was chosen NBA Coach of the Year for the 1986-87 season while with Portland.
