BLUES PULL OFF UPSET OF ALLEGHANY

BUENA VISTA - Misty Snider scored 14 of her game-high 16 points in the second half, leading Parry McCluer to a 52-44 upset of Alleghany in a non-district game Wednesday night.

Parry McCluer, a Group A school that lost by 42 to Group AA Alleghany last year, also got big performances from Crystal Humphries and Lindsey Coleman. Humphries, despite being shackled by foul problems had 13 points, including eight in the final quarter. Coleman, a 5-foot-10 freshman playing her first game at point guard, added 11 points.

It was the season opener for the Fighting Blues. Alleghany (1-2) was led by Natasha Chapman, who had nine points.

Tuesday's games

Martinsville 74, Gretna 35: In Gretna, Erica Brandon scored 30 points, and Sam Ferguson added 12 as the Bulldogs opened the season with a victory over the Hawks in the Piedmont District.

Gretna was led by Charita Dews with 15.

Chatham 57, Laurel Park 50: In Chatham, Juanita Crews scored 19 points as the Cavaliers grabbed an early lead on the way to a victory in the Piedmont District opener for both teams Tuesday.

The Lancers were led by Latoya Perkins with 18 points.

Riverheads 47, Bath County 37: In Staunton, despite getting a big game from Katie Hardbarger, the Chargers lost for the second time in a week to Riverheads in a non-district game.

Hardbarger, a 6-foot freshman, scored a game-high 13 points and collected five rounds while dealing out a pair of assists. Kara Hughes led Riverheads as one of three 11-point scorers, hitting a pair of 3-point shots.

Covington 55, Alleghany 48: In Covington, the Cougars rallied to beat the Mountaineers for the first time since 1982. Covington (1-0) used a balanced scoring attack led by 13 points from Charlesetta Laws.

Magna Vista 55, Dan River 28: In Ringgold, the Warriors outscored the Wildcats 21-2 in the first quarter and never looked back en route to victory in the Piedmont District opener for both teams.

Tanesia Kellam led Magna Vista (4-0) with 17 points, and Felicia Craig added 16.

Dan River is 0-1.

Radford 49, Bland 18: In Radford, the Bobcats used an intense man-to-man defense to create many transition baskets in a non-district victory over the Rockets.

Crystal Hubbard led the Bobcats with 16 points on seven of 10 shooting while pulling down seven rebounds and dishing out four assists. Nine of the 10 Radford players scored as the Bobcats improve to 1-1 and Bland drops to 0-2.

Stuarts Draft 38, Rockbridge County 30: In Stuarts Draft, Amanda Propst scored 18 points as Stuarts Draft pulled away in the final quarter for the non-district victory over the Wildcats.

Patrick County 69, Fieldale-Collinsville 66: In Stuart, Amy Nelson scored 24 points as Patrick County beat Fieldale-Collinsville in a Piedmont District girls' basketball game Tuesday.
