``Our people all along have been saying, `Bring in some name teams and bring in some ranked teams,''' Bower said. ``Well, this is an opportunity for them to come out and watch one of the top teams in the country.
``This is what they said they've wanted and this is what will be here Saturday. It's time to buy a ticket and come on.''
The 5 p.m. game against the Hokies is the first of five this season for the Golden Eagles at 33,000-seat M.M. Roberts Stadium.
Season-ticket sales have lagged behind the pace set last year, when Southern Miss sold 7,462, including almost 2,000 family plan sales (half-price, upper-deck seating).
``We've been about 500 [season] tickets behind last year's pace, but we'd like to think it'll pick up some after the good start we had,'' said Nick Floyd, an associate athletic director at Southern Miss.
The Golden Eagles opened the season with a 25-10 victory at Tulane in New Orleans. An estimated 5,500 Southern Miss fans were at the Superdome, where the Golden Eagles had 314 yards rushing, including two 100-yard rushers.
