BULK, BRUSH COLLECTION TO CONTINUE

Roanoke County's new bulk and brush pickup program began this week, but some residents haven't heard the news. So, for up to a month, the county will continue to collect items for people who haven't called in to request a pickup, as now required.

The county logged 500 phone calls Tuesday from people with questions about pickup, said Anne Marie Green, director of community relations.

As of this month, Roanoke County no longer collects brush and bulk items on regular monthly routes. Instead, residents can call the general services department and request a pickup whenever they have items - brush, furniture or other large household goods - that need disposal. The county will then tell residents what day a collection truck will come by to get the items.

Nancy Bailey, coordinator of solid waste, said some people put items out in front of their houses this week. She said the county will collect the items for the next few weeks and leave a tag notifying residents of the policy change.

Green said the county has taken out ads in local newspapers and sent brochures to all county residents, but some haven't gotten the word.

``We could go door to door, and there would still be people who say they didn't hear about it,'' Bailey said. ``We're going to do a transition period. We will pick it up, but we'll leave a tag.''

The county has hired a full-time worker to take calls, log requests and schedule pickups.
