With 40 seconds remaining in the game, Glenvar held a three-point lead and possession of the ball. But Smith stole the ball and hit a layup to cut Byrd's deficit to one point with 15 seconds left.
The Highlanders then lost possession and fouled the Terriers' Wendy Hayden, who made the front end of a one-and-one to knot the score at 54 with nine seconds remaining.
In last week's William Byrd Tip-Off Tournament, the Group AA Terriers beat the Group A Highlanders by seven points in the championship game.
``Any time you can play a program as good as Byrd is, we're pleased to be competitive, let alone win it,'' said Dennis Layman, Glenvar's coach.

BEDFORD - Hope Cook scored 24 points as the Generals staved off a furious rally by the Minutemen to post the Seminole District win.
William Campbell (2-0) led 42-31 before Liberty (1-1) ran off 10 straight points to close to one. The Minutemen had several chances to put it out in the final seconds but couldn't convert on the offensive end.
Shannon Jurkus and Sue Cowlbeck led Liberty with 12 points apiece.
