Johnson, son of Louise and Robert R. Johnson Sr., received a master's degree in vocational and technical education. He will teach at William Fleming High School.
Gross, daughter of Roy and Judy Gross, received a master of education degree in secondary science education. She will be working as a biology and chemistry teacher in Gloucester County Schools.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY'S COLLEGE OF BUSINESS recently honored three Roanoke students with college and departmental academic awards.
Glenda R. Morris received the Wal-Mart Retailing Award; Alison L. Scott received the Outstanding Student in Hotel-Restaurant Management Award and Pizza Hut Scholarship; and Elaina M. Schyphers received the Banfi Vinters Scholarship.
ROANOKE COLLEGE'S DEAN'S COUNCIL recently presented its 1994 Award for Exemplary Teaching to Bobbye Au and its Award for Exemplary Service to James Buriak.
Au, professor of English and director of the Honors Program, has previously been recognized for her commitment to teaching. In 1989, she was chosen Outstanding Professor of the Year by the college's chapters of Cardinal and Blue Key, and this year she was elected by the students, faculty and staff to be a member of the "Last Lecture" series.
Buriak, who has been at Roanoke College for 13 years, is an assistant professor of physical education and an athletic trainer.
KRISTEN HUFFMAN of Roanoke has been selected as one of 25 Trojan Ambassadors for 1994-95 at Troy State University in Troy, Ala. Trojan Ambassadors are hosts and hostesses for the school and recruit visiting students.
Huffman, daughter of Gary Huffman and Gwen Williams, is a junior chemistry major.
JEFFREY B. PATTERSON of Roanoke has completed a series of courses at the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology in Troy, Ohio. He also graduated from the Combination/Pipe Welding program.
JOHN CAPPS and YVONNE ELLIOTT, both associate professors of English at Virginia Western Community College, recently completed requirements for doctorate degrees.
Capps earned an Ed.D. in English Education from Virginia Tech, and Elliott earned a Ph.D. in English from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
JULIE SINGLETON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Brown of Fincastle, has been re-elected chairwoman of Mary Baldwin College's chapter of Habitat for Humanity for the 1994-95 academic year.
Singleton, a 1992 graduate of James River High School, is a rising junior at Mary Baldwin.

LAURIE ANN CHOCKLETT, daughter of Robert and Betty Chocklett of Roanoke County, received a master of science degree in physical therapy from Medical College of Virginia -Virginia Commonwealth University.
Chocklett is a staff physical therapist in acute care at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
CREIGHTON M. LITTON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Litton of Buchanan, has received a master of science degree in forestry at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.
Litton is a 1987 graduate of James River High School.

THE VINTON DOGWOOD CHARTER CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN BUSINESS WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION recently presented scholarships to six women. A total of $8,200 was given to: Cecelia Fitzgerald at Virginia Tech, Yolanda Chapman at Virginia Commonwealth University, Carmen Price at Bridgewater College, Grace Nofsinger at Virginia Western Community College, Heather Cormany at Roanoke College and Andrea Herron at Emory and Henry University.
THE ROANOKE REDEVELOPMENT AND HOUSING AUTHORITY recently awarded five $2,000 scholarships to several residents. TRINA GRAY of Roanoke and ROY GREENLAND of Vinton recently earned master's of education degrees at Lynchburg College.
ANDREA BOITNOTT of Palm Harbor, Fla., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Basil Boitnott of Boones Mill, has been inducted into the National Business College Alumni Hall of Achievement for outstanding professional performance.
A 1986 business administration graduate with special study in marketing and fashion merchandising, Boitnott is marketing director and assistant mall manager for the Edward J. DeBartolo Corp. in Port Richey, Fla.
Several other Roanoke-area residents also were recognized. Jenkyoung Kim of Roanoke received the Achievement Award; and Andrea Paige Wolfe and Lisa Dawn Bedwell, both of Salem, received the M. A. Smythe Award, honoring one of the college's long-term officials. The Smythe award is presented for high academic achievement.
The E. M. Coulter Award, given in memory of NBC's former president and the longest association of any individual with a college in the United States, went to Joyce Cook Burdette and Loretta Mills Hart, both of Roanoke.
Cheryl A. Kay of Salem, Tara Denise Eddy of Roanoke and Linda Carol Meese of Buchanan received the Mary P. McGurn Award for excellence in the field of secretarial science.
Robert Estol Snider III of Salem, a graduate in the bachelor's program, received the Dorothy Coulter Hancock Award.
THE COLONEL WILLIAM PRESTON ROANOKE CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL SOCIETY DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION recently presented awards for its Junior American Citizens Program, "Flags in American History" to students at Crystal Spring Elementary and Roanoke Catholic schools.
Crystal Spring fourth-grade winners in the short-story category were: Lindsay Hock, daughter of E. B. Hock, first at the chapter, state and division levels and second at the national competition; Laura Hiles, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Charles H. Hiles Jr., second at the chapter and state levels; and Ashley Atkinson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert K. Atkinson, third at the chapter and state levels.
Crystal Spring fourth-graders who won in the the poem category were: Matthew McDowell, son of Mr. and Mrs. John McDowell, first at the chapter and state levels and second in the division; Emily Althouse, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Douglas Althouse, second at the chapter and state levels; and Charlotte Leftwich, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Leftwich, third in the chapter and state.
Allyson Fulton, third grade, daughter of Mr. John and Mrs. Jeannie Fulton, was second in the chapter in the artwork-stamp design category. Fourth-graders who won in the artwork-stamp category are: David Durham, son of Dr. and Mrs. Alfred Durham, first in the chapter and state and second in division; and Lee Kreger, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Kreger III, second at the chapter and state levels.
Fifth-graders who placed in the artwork-stamp design were: Elizabeth Bradshaw, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Bradshaw, first in chapter and second in state; Mandy Barnes, daughter of Mrs. Lisa Barnes, second in the chapter and third in state; and Donny Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Smith, third in the chapter.
Roanoke Catholic creative-writing winners included the following fourth-graders: Philip Wall, first in the chapter and state and third in the division; Becky Haas, second at the chapter and state levels; Laura Rucker, third in the chapter and state; and Jennifer Gillespie, honorable mention at the chapter level.
Fourth-grade winners in the artwork-poster category included: Tiffany Wortman, first in the chapter and state and third in the division; and Elizabeth Mulvaney, second at the chapter and state levels.
