BRADLEY T. SNEED, investment vice president with the Roanoke office of J.C. Bradford & Co., has been named to the President's Club of The American Funds Group. He was honored for superior service to investors in Roanoke and Richmond and for continued excellence in financial counseling in mutual fund investments.

WHEAT FIRST BUTCHER SINGER INC. has announced that four senior vice presidents/investment officers in its Roanoke office have been awarded membership in the Senior Leadership Council. They are Corbin B. Bailey, F. Gary Osborne, John C. Parrott II and Robert H. Phillips, all of Roanoke.

PHYLLIS K. ROUSE,marketing coordinator with Dewberry & Davis, has been chosen as president of the North Roanoke Chapter American Business Women's Association.

Other officers are Karen Sowers, vice president; Mary Martin, recording secretary; Judy Muse, corresponding secretary; and Brenda Cooper, treasurer.

MELISSA CASSITY, supervisor in the consumer loan department at First Union Bank, has been chosen 1994 Boss Business Associate by the North Roanoke Chapter American Business Women's Association.

She is a graduate of William Byrd High School and holds a certificate of achievement from the Institution of Financial Education.

KAREN JONES has been named Roanoke chairman for the 1994 Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

She will coordinate the local fund-raising efforts of the telethon, which will be broadcast on Sept. 4 and 5.

CAROLINE TUCK, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Tuck of Roanoke, was honored as one of the top five most outstanding Jaycees in the nation. A member of the Alexandria Jaycees, Tuck received the John H. Armbuster Memorial Award at the 74th annual national convention.

ELAINE C. BELL, relocation director at MKB Realtors, recently received the Certified Relocation Professional designation. This designation is awarded by the Employee Relocation Council to group members who meet specific service requirements and pass a written examination.

THE BLUE RIDGE CHAPTER OF THE CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATION INSTITUTE has announced the names of its officers for the 1994-95 fiscal year. They are Duane K. Smith, president; Earle H. Shumate, president-elect; Lenard A. Rowe, vice president; Lawrence B. Dickenson, secretary; John C. Shields, treasurer; Daniel H. Fendley, director/industry; Robert J. Goodwin, director/professional; Michael Baratta, director/professional; Larry W. Degen, immediate past president.

LOUIE WOOTEN has received the first-place award as the leading sales manager -1993 from the American Funeral Assurance Company.

DAVID CHEWNING of Roanoke recently was named best in his chapter in Chevrolet's Professional Service Council Regional competition.

DR. J. HAYDEN HOLLINGSWORTH, a Roanoke cardiologist, has been elected to a four-year term as president of the Virginia chapter of the American College of Cardiology.

IDS FINANCIAL SERVICES INC. has announced that several employees have received new designations. They are Joseph Craig Jr., a personal financial planner who has been named a master planner; and Ryan Long, a personal financial planner who has been named certified financial planner.

Suzanne Osborne, a certified financial planner, was invited to join the Gold Team, top 3 percent of IDS planners.

Osborne, who specializes in advanced business and estate planning, is the first woman to be selected to the Gold Team from Virginia.

GREGG S. WOOD, financial investigator with Trigon, has been named a certified fraud examiner by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. The designation is awarded to select professionals responsible for detecting, deterring and investigating fraud.

MICHAEL D. PORTER, formerly of Salem, has been named president and chief executive officer of Acheson Industries Inc. in Port Huron, Mich.

Porter joined the organization in 1991 as senior vice president responsible for U.S. operations and was in charge of European operations before becoming executive vice president and chief operating officer in 1993.

Porter is the son of Josephine Porter of Salem.

SHEILA L. JONES, a sales representative for Avon Products Inc., earned an all expense-paid trip to Orlando, Fla., by achieving sales totaling $75,400 in 1993.

Jones, of Roanoke, is one of 1,100 sales representatives out of 415,000 in the nation who qualified for the "National Honors Event" by reaching a minimum sales level of $75,000 in 1993.

KAREN H. JONES, agency manager at Allstate Insurance Co., has been designated Certified Insurance Counselor after completing an insurance education program sponsored by the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors.

JAMES S. FRANCIS, president of Jackson Insurance Agency Inc. in Hillsville, was elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia Inc. He will be responsible for its 6th District boundaries, an area closely following the old Virginia 6th Legislative District boundaries.

Francis, formerly of Roanoke, also was president of the Independent Agents Association of Roanoke for two terms.

WILLIAM R. STOUT of Stout Insurance & Financial Services Inc. of Roanoke, has received membership in the Fortis Sales Elite Leaders Circle by the Fortis Financial Group. Membership is based on outstanding sales and service accomplishments to clients.

LEE YEAGER of Roanoke has been appointed eastern area sales manager for the bronze division of Matthews International Corp.

Yeager has worked for the company for 37 years, holding positions that include quality control and pricing administrator, office manager, office services manager and advertising copywriter. He has covered the District of Columbia, Virginia, Western Maryland and West Virginia territory since 1980.

CAROLYN V. PENCE and DON A. ASSAID CLU were recently honored by the Roanoke Valley Association of Life Underwriters.

Pence, owner of Pence Insurance Agency, was named Life Underwriter of the Year. She has held offices in the organization since 1980, most recently leading the Life Underwriters Political Action Committee for the past three years. Assaid was given the Outstanding Service Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the success and growth of the association. The Equitable Life Insurance Society representative recently was chairman of the membership committee. In this period, the Roanoke association finished first in the nation in its size category for new membership growth.

HANK HUTCHERSON, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.K. Hutcherson of Roanoke and assistant actuary with Home Beneficial Life Insurance Co. in Richmond, has been named a fellow of the Society of Actuaries.

Hutcherson is a 1988 graduate of the University of Virginia.

DONALD F. CLEMENT of Roanoke has been named an investment executive at Ferguson, Andrews & Associates in Roanoke. He was recently president of ABBA Financial Consulting in Roanoke and previously was an executive of Reserve life Insurance Co. in Dallas and Tillinghast Inc. in Atlanta.

THE ADVISORY BOARD OF THE RADIO ADVERTISING BUREAU in New York has named radio account executives Dave Babcock, Liz Carroll and Charlene Watson-Scott as radio marketing associates. The three recently completed an intensive six-week course and scored well on the final examination.

KEN WOODS,safety coordinator in the Salem plant, has been selected as Sybron Chemicals Inc.'s Employee of the Month. He received this award for his outstanding efforts in documenting data revealing a decrease of unsafe conditions at the Salem facility.

Woods has worked at Sybron Chemicals Inc. since 1993.

JAIME BANNWART has been named employee of the Year for 1994 by Brandon Oaks, a life-care retirement community sponsored by Virginia Lutheran Homes Inc.

Bannwart is resident program coordinator and also oversees the operation of transportation services for residents.

DREW KERSHAW, president and chief executive officer of Connex Pipe Systems in Troutville, recently was named to the board of directors of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association International.

MARTIN BROS. CONTRACTORS INC. in Roanoke recently was awarded construction contracts totaling $2,047,200. The contracts are for renovations of the existing Elizabeth Arden plant in Roanoke, the Carilion Salem Center and the Grand Pavilion in Roanoke, which is for the new offices for Grand Piano and Furniture Co.

GAIL LaMAR recently was elected president of Longwood Chapter of American Business Women's Association. She has served as vice president, secretary, business associates night chairman and women of the year.

Other elected officers are Jean Vest, vice president; Gloria Brauch, secretary; and Terri Delbridge, treasurer.

ROBERT BYE, a Roanoke agent, was among the top 100 agents in sales for the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. He is associated with Northwestern's Dale E. Forbes district agency.

KENNETH E. WIDENER, field representative for Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society, recently received two awards during the 44th annual convention of the National Association of Fraternal Insurance Counsellors. He received the Three-Year Quality Award and Million-Dollar Production Award, based on 1993 production.

DURWARD WARREN OWEN, son of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Owen of Roanoke, has received the Evin C. Varner Award from the College Fraternity Editors Association and the Distinguished Service Award from the Fraternity Executives Association.

Given annually, the Varner Award recognizes the fraternity, sorority, professional or honor society member who has worked over a period of years for the betterment of that system, especially in communications.

The Distinguished Service Award is given annually to individuals who have exhibited years of meritorious service to the fraternity world.

Owen is chief executive officer of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, headquartered in Charlotte, N.C.

DR. JITENDRA S. DESAI, medical director at Lewis-Gale Psychiatric Center, recently received board certification in adolescent psychiatry from the American Board of Adolescent Psychiatry.

ALETA T. SPRADLIN of First Union National Bank of Virginia, recently was promoted to telecommunications officer in Roanoke.
