Visitors bureau elects officers

L. Gerald Carter, general manager of Holiday Inn Tanglewood, was recently elected president of the Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau for 1994-95.

Other officers are: Dr. James Sears, executive director of Center in the Square, vice president; Robert Archer, general manager of Blue Ridge Beverage, secretary; and E.C. Warren, owner and manager of the Roanoke Restaurant, treasurer.

New members of the board are Russ Merritt of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and Marylin Curtis of Hamlar-Curtis Funeral home.

\ Fraternal order win state awards

The Roanoke Valley Chapter of the Order of DeMolay won several awards at the recent statewide DeMolay Conclave at Lynchburg College.

DeMolay is an international organization sponsored by the masons for young men ages 13 to 21.

John Critzer and Kelley Corbett, both of Fincastle, became state champions with their public presentations delivered from memory. Matt Ladenheim, also of Fincastle, won the state oratorical competition.

The chapter won first place trophies in the softball and basketball tournaments and took second in volleyball.

Karnes Memorial Scholarships went to Critzer, Ladenheim, Jason Akers of Roanoke and Chris Pendleton of Blue Ridge.

The chapter also earned an Advisor's Honor Key for its exceptional membership growth in the past year.

\ Salem YWCA offering before-school day care

The YWCA Salem Center will be offering before-school day care in addition to its after-school program.

This state-licensed program serves both girls and boys, ages 51/2 to 12 in grades kindergarten through 6, Monday through Friday.

Transportation will be provided to and from the following elementary schools: G. W. Carver, Salem, South Salem and West Salem. Full-day programs will also be provided on most of Salem's school holidays and closings.

To enroll, participants must become members of the YWCA and pay the program fees. Discounts are given for additional children enrolling from the same family. Call 389-8782.

\ Veteran's group installs officers

Rhoda Woodson was recently installed as president of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Blue Ridge Post 484.

Other officers for the 1994-95 term are: Renva Wilson, senior vice president; Virginia Bower, junior vice president; Ann Saunders, chaplain; India Harris, guard; Ola Shortt, conductress; and Ruth McGlothlin, secretary and treasurer.

\ 4-H programs need volunteers

The Roanoke Valley 4-H programs need volunteers to work with people ages 5 to 19.

No special knowledge is required, and training will be provided later in the fall.
