A LITTLE CALM BEFORE THE STORM OF FALL SPORTS

There isn't a great deal going on this time of year.

Summer sports and activities have finished. The start of school, the coolness in the evening air and Labor Day sales all say that the seasons have changed.

The fall sports are just getting under way. Still, there are some interesting things going on besides football:

ON TARGET: There are some big events on the way, such as the Big Game 3-D Archery Tournament Saturday and Sunday at Triangle Archers Range in Montgomery County.

Competitors may shoot either day, or both. Archers will shoot at 25 McKinzie targets with a maximum distance of 45 yards. All equipment styles may be shot: open/release, open/fingers, fixed pin/release, fixed pin/fingers, traditional.

The cost is $8 for the first round and $5 for an additional round. Family registration is $20. Registration is 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m.-noon Sunday.

There will be awards for different styles, age groups and sexes. Awards will be given out at 4 p.m. Sunday.

For more information, call JIM OVERFELT at 231-5817 (days) or 552-8023 (night).

Triangle Archers is at 1250 Burley Lane in the Merrimac section of the county.

GOLF GATHERINGS: Although summer is just about gone, there still is time to hit the links. And one place to do that is the second annual benefit golf tournament for the Crisis Pregnancy Center of the New River Valley.

The tournament tees off Sept. 19 at Thorn Spring Golf Club in Pulaski. Golfing begins at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start. The tournament will use a two-man captain's choice format.

The registration fee of $80 per team includes green fees, cart, prizes and refreshments. The deadline is Sept. 10. For more information, call FREDDY ASHWORTH at 633-0484 after 5 p.m.

WELLNESS CHALLENGE: One way of showing you are physically well is to run. The Wellness Center at Radford Community Hospital, along with Ruritan National and the Radford/Fairlawn Ruritan Club, provide you with that chance.

The ninth annual Radford Wellness Challenge is Oct. 8 at Bisset Park in Radford. Events include a 5 K (3.1-mile) run, a 2.5K (1.5-mile) walk and a 2.5 K youth run.

Adult entry fees are $10 until Sept. 30 and $12 thereafter. All participants who register by Sept. 30 will receive a long-sleeve T-shirt. Awards will be given to the top male and female finishers overall and the top finishers in the 28 age/sex divisions.

Youth registration fees are $7.50 until Sept. 30 and $10 thereafter. All youth participants will receive a ribbon and a short-sleeved T-shirt.

Registration closes Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. There will be no race-day registration.

For more information, call the Radford Wellness Center at 639-3241.

SPORTS CLUBBING: One way to learn what is going on in the sports world locally is to attend meetings of the Blacksburg Sports Club, held Wednesdays at noon at Custom Catering Center on Patrick Henry Drive.

Virginia Tech assistant football coach J.B. GRIMES is today's featured speaker. Grimes will review the Hokies' season-opener against Arkansas State and provide a look at this week's game at Southern Mississippi.

A hot lunch buffet is available at meetings for $6.50 per person. Payments for lunch may be made at the door. To make reservations (which are requested) or for more information about the sports club, call DEAN FARMER at 953-0388.

SO YOU DON'T MISS IT: Some traditional fall happenings around the New River Valley are still gearing up. Here is a rundown of some of those activities where the sign-up deadline is drawing near.
