BOTETOURT DOWNS JAMES RIVER

Lord Botetourt's Sarah Hicks scored 13 of her team-high 17 points in the second quarter to lift the Cavaliers to a 62-38 high school girls' basketball victory over Botetourt County rival James River on Thursday night.

Katrina Elliot added 12 points for Lord Botetourt (5-1). Angie Johnson led the Knights (0-2) with a game-high 19 points.

James River led 7-3 after the first quarter, but Lord Botetourt took control after outscoring the Knights 28-10 in the second period.

Shawsville 55

Christiansburg 46

CHRISTIANSBURG - Shawsville used a full court press to force 12 first half turnovers en route to a non-district victory over the Blue Demons.

Brandy Alexander led the Shawnees (3-1) with 17 points while Robin Burdette added 14 and her sister, Beth, chipped in 10. Christiansburg (0-1) was led by Crystal Moles with 12 points and Maureen Jackson scored 11.

Blacksburg 58

Tazewell 50

BLACKSBURG - Lisa Price scored nine of her game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter including three critical free throws down the stretch as Blacksburg survived in the non-district game..

The Indians (2-3) made 10 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter. Blacksburg jumped out to a 15-6 lead by holding Tazewell without a field goal until 10 seconds remained in the first quarter.

Blacksburg's Nicole Williams hit four free throws in the fourth and finished with nine points. April Rogers added 12 points for Blacksburg.

Starr Henderson led Tazewell (1-3) with 18 points.

Narrows 49

Radford 30

NARROWS - The Green Wave's man-to-man defense wore down the Bobcats as Narrows (2-1) ran off with the non-district win.

Suzanne Webb scored 15 points and Melissa Lawrence had 10 points and nine assists, giving her 25 assists in the Green Wave's first three games.

Crystal Hubbard scored 10 points for Radford (1-2), which learned that sophomore guard Charlee Taylor, who hasn't played this season, will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery next week and will be out indefinitely.

Staunton River 49

Nelson County 42

MONETA - Staunton River allowed Nelson County only six points in the fourth quarter and Dina Mitchell hit her last six free throws to help the Golden Eagles come from behind to win the Seminole District game.

Quakeea Miles led Nelson County (1-1) with 12 points and Cam Campbell and Jessica Beaver each chipped in with 10 for the Governors.

Mitchell topped all scorers with 17 and Courtney Hurd added 10 points and seven steals to pace Staunton River (2-0).

Giles 58

Craig County 39

GILES - Gina Claytor scored 11 of her game-high 25 points in the third quarter as the Spartans pulled away to a non-district victory over Craig County.

The Rockets (0-1) had stayed close through three quarters, trailing just 40-36, thanks to 21 of Chrissy Robertson's team-high 24 points. But Giles (1-1) limited Craig County to three points - all by Robertson - in the final period to put the game away.

Tomika Saunders added 10 points for the Spartans.

Floyd 74

Fort Chiswell 25

FLOYD - Leigh-Anne Pursifull scored 18 of her game-high 19 points in the first half as Floyd ran past Fort Chiswell 74-25 in a non-district game.

Melissa Cantrell added 11 points and seven assists for Floyd (5-0). Fort Chiswell falls to 0-2.

Galax 69

Pocohontas 30

POCOHONTAS - The Maroon Tide worked the ball inside for easy shots and forced 17 first-half turnovers with pressure defense to cruise past the Indians.

Tammy Cox led Galax (4-1) with 14 points and Jill Cockerham had 10. Pocohontas is 0-2.

Auburn 71

Bland 23

BLAND - Auburn used balanced scoring to jump out to a 36-14 halftime lead and never looked back on the way to a romp over winless Bland.

Michelle Collins led Auburn with 21 points while Sherry Smith chipped in 17 and Lori Lyons added 12. Patches Umbarger led Bland (0-3) with eight points.
