BAHA'IS CELEBRATE 100 YEARS IN THE UNITED STATES

Members of the BAHA'I FAITH in the New River Valley celebrate the centennial of the religion's establishment in the United States Sept. 18, 2-4 p.m., at the Christiansburg Public Library, 125 Sheltman St. The first American Baha'i was Thornton Chase, who adopted the faith in 1894. The American Baha'i community now numbers approximately 125,000. Founded by the prophet Baha'u'llah in 1863 in Persia (now Iran), Baha'i stresses the oneness of humanity.

New River Baha'is - approximately 25 members strong - have been meeting for over 25 years. They became an official Baha'i community in 1977 and meet every 19 days for worship in members' homes.

New Dublin Presbyterian Church observes GLOBAL MISSION SUNDAY this Sunday. The Rev. Dr. David Jenkins, the senior associate director of the Medical Benevolence Foundation, preaches at 11 a.m. and describes the medical mission's work in a slide show at an international pot luck dinner at 1 p.m.

The New Dublin congregation has been preparing for Global Mission Sunday for several months, as members raised money, made hospital gowns and children's clothing items, prepared oral reydration formula and assembled health kits for kids as well as toys and coloring books for hospitalized youngsters overseas. The congregation has collected over $1,200 to dig two wells to supply safe drinking water to a village in Malawi.
