CATHOLIC CRUISES, 42-6

P.J. Moyer rushed for 204 yards and three touchdowns Friday night to power Roanoke Catholic to a 42-6 non-district football victory over Shawsville.

Moyer had TD runs of 1, 26 and 66 yards as Catholic (3-0) bolted to a 28-0 lead in the second quarter.

The Celtics rushed for 306 yards and limited Shawsville (0-1) to only five first downs.

Bassett 35

William Byrd 7

Cliff Wimbush rushed for 155 yards and two touchdowns, and Chris Hairston threw for 86 yards and returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to lead the Bengals past the Terriers.

Carl Watkins put Bassett (1-0) on the board with a 58-yard run, and Wimbush scored on runs of 9 and 70 yards to make the score 20-0 at the half. Bassett made it 28-0 when Chris Hairston hit Tyree Hairston, who caught four passes for 86 yards, with a 28-yard scoring strike then threw for a two-point conversion.

Byrd (1-1) scored on Barry Myvette's 53-yard touchdown run.

Franklin County 21

Laurel Park 20

ROCKY MOUNT - The Eagles stormed back from a 20-7 deficit with 14 fourth-quarter points to down the Lancers in a non-district game.

John Muse scored on a 1-yard run with 24 seconds remaining to tie the score at 20, and Dan Berger kicked the deciding extra point.

The Franklin County drive was 10 plays, all on the ground, and covered 48 yards.

Laurel Park's Solomon Paddyfote returned the ensuing kickoff 49 yards to the Franklin County 36 before being driven out of bounds. On the next play, Darrell Wilson's pass to Paddyfote went to the Eagles' 12. Paddyfote was injured on the play and had to be carried from the field on a stretcher.

With 5 seconds remaining, Laurel Park's Derrick Manns was wide right on a 30-yard field-goal attempt.

Franklin County (1-1) rushed for 266 yards, led by Tony Muse's 153 yards on 23 attempts. John Muse added 90 yards on 12 carries.

Paddyfote rushed for 71 yards for the Lancers (0-1).

Petersburg 28

William Fleming 17

PETERSBURG - Sophomore quarterback Anthony Pope ran for one touchdown and passed for two as the Crimson Wave won its opener and sent the Colonels to their second loss.

Pope completed 10 of 23 passes for 153 yards for Petersburg in the non-district contest. He found Andre Hackney on a 21-yard touchdown in the second quarter, then hooked up with DeJuan Coleman in the third for an 11-yard touchdown.

Pope scored on a 12-yard run in the fourth quarter that provided the final margin.

William Fleming (0-2) cut the score to 12-9 in the third quarter when Phillip Barrett rushed 2 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Shannon Wilson connected with Charles Burnette on a 40-yard touchdown in the final quarter.

Northside 48

Carroll County 6

HILLSVILLE - It seemed every time Karim Thompson touched the ball, he scored a touchdown for the Vikings (1-1). Thompson, who carried five times, scored three touchdowns and rushed for 177 yards. Included in that total were scoring runs of 54 and 84 yards.

Northside, which led 48-0 after three quarters, scored five touchdowns on plays of 54 yards or longer. Mike Dillon and Gary Henderson each had touchdowns of 55 yards, and Kirk Likens scored on a 54-yard run. Booth, who was 6-for-7 on extra-point kicks, scored a defensive touchdown after recovering a fumble and running 8 yards.

William Campbell 21

Liberty 20

BEDFORD - The Generals blocked an extra-point attempt with 8 minutes, 4 seconds remaining to deny the Minutemen in their bid to overcome a 14-point deficit.

William Campbell also blocked a punt that Sharron Braxton returned 30 yards for the Generals' first score. William Brown carried 19 times for 147 yards and two touchdowns as William Campbell improved its record to 2-0 overall and in the Seminole District.

Liberty is 0-2 overall and in the district despite a pair of touchdown passes from Mike Padgett, who threw for 182 yards.

Craig County 53

Auburn 33

RINER - Zachary Peters scored three touchdowns and Robbie Huffman ran for three and passed for one as the Rockets outlasted the Eagles in a wild non-district game.

Craig County (1-1) rallied from a seven-point first quarter deficit with three touchdowns to take the lead for good.

Peters scored on a 81-yard kickoff return to begin the onslaught. Huffman put Craig County ahead with a 61-yard run, and Huffman hit Peters with a 5-yard scoring pass to give the Rockets the lead for good. .

But Auburn hung in, closing to 35-33 midway through the third quarter on a pair of scoring runs by Bobby Bonds and two scoring passes by Jeremy Akers.

Craig County then pulled away, scoring on a Chris Blankenship interception return to close the third quarter and short runs by Huffman and Peters in the fourth.

North Cross 26

Brunswick Academy 19

LAWRENCEVILLE - The Johnsons put on a show, along with newcomer Robert Rude, as the Red Raiders opened their season with a non-league victory over Brunswick Academy.

Skip Johnson opened with an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He also ran 65 yards with a recovered fumble and caught a 14-yard pass from Hal Johnson for the touchdowns that gave North Cross an 18-13 lead at the half.

Hal Johnson, who threw for 175 yards, scored on a 2-yard run with what turned out to be the winning touchdown. Rude, a senior who decided to come out for football for the first time this year, caught seven passes for 111 yards.

The Raiders, who won the State Private School Division I title a year ago, kept the ball the last four minutes to preserve the victory after Chris Winn hauled in a 37-yard touchdown pass for Brunswick Academy (0-3) to make it a one-touchdown game in the final quarter.

Fieldale-Collinsville 40

COLLINSVILLE - Senior quarterback Brian Alley scored on runs of 50 and 55 yards and threw a touchdown pass to Mancino Craighead as the Cavaliers won their opener.

Craighead also scored on a 46-yard fumble recovery and Kevin Franklin had a 97-yard touchdown run. Alley intercepted a pass and caused a fumble.

James River's record fell to 0-2.
