The Knights, the fifth-ranked team in Timesland, rolled Martinsville 25-8 at Cave Spring's field Friday night, as quarterback Jeff Lang completed 6-of-7 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns.
After losing 14 games in a row, Cave Spring has opened its 1994 season with back-to-back wins. Friday's loss was the season opener for Martinsville.
The Bulldogs, who won their first nine games last season, scored first Friday as sophomores Jess Wade and Manti Venable connected on a 13-yard pass on fourth-and-goal.
Cave Spring then reeled off 25 unanswered points, including 17 after halftime. In addition to Lang's aerial performance, the Knights had balanced running from Anthony Woollums (50 rushing yards), Dusty Beekman (49), and O.J. Beane (33).
``It wasn't easy,'' said Knights coach Steve Spangler. ``Our execution was good at the end, but sloppiness is what got us in the hole in the first place. As last week, however [a one-point win over Northside], the group got its act together.''
The Knights' first touchdown came late in the first half, as Lang hit Jason Fox for 17 yards. Martinsville defender Bryan Roberts mis-timed his interception jump and Fox scored easily.
The Knights consistently moved the ball in the second half, and Lang found his receivers on several third-down calls.
``Jeff makes good judgments,'' Spangler said, ``and our front line is doing a tremendous job.''
Cave Spring's Billy Frantz thwarted two Martinsville drives with interceptions that he returned for 29 and 28 yards, respectively. Frantz also caught a 58-yard pass, and scored on a two-point conversion pass.
