NAMES & CHANGES

Roanoke College names director of public relations

TERESA D. THOMAS has been named director of public relations for Roanoke College. After graduating from the college in 1987, she began working in the public relations office as associate editor. She became assistant director of public relations and, most recently, became director of media relations.

In her new position, she will be spokeswoman, media coordinator and liaison for the college and will oversee all advertising, external publications and news releases. She also will be responsible for the college's efforts to foster internal and external relationships.

BANKING

SANDRA B. LEMONS has been promoted to assistant vice president of First Union National Bank of Virginia's customer information center in Roanoke. Lemons joined the bank in 1974, when it operated as First National Exchange Bank. She was a bookkeeper, operations assistant, loan officer, branch officer and trainer in the customer information center before becoming manager of the department.

CONSTRUCTION

ALLAN R. HAGA, formerly a project manager for Hammond-Mitchell Inc., general contractors in Covington, has been promoted to the new position of division vice president in charge of all utility projects at the company. Also, THOMAS H. SIBOLD, formerly a project manager, has been named division vice president in charge of all industrial projects. Haga has been with the company since 1980, when he started as a project superintendent. Before that, he was owner of Empire Steel Inc. Sibold has been with Hammond-Mitchell since 1982. He was employed by Hercules Inc. for more than 20 years. Hammond-Mitchell specializes in heavy civil construction, mainly concrete and structural steel work.

GOVERNMENT

CLAUDE N. SMITH has been appointed by Roanoke City Council to a four-year term on the Roanoke Regional Airport Commission. He is president and owner of State Amusement Co. Inc., a Roanoke-based company engaged in the music and amusement business, and has been a pilot since 1957. Before the formation of the regional airport commission, he was a member of the airport's advisory commission for 14 years.

HOSPITALITY

STEPHEN E. PEELER has been named group sales manager at the Roanoke Airport Marriott hotel. He has had five years of hotel experience, most recently with Guest Quarters Hotel in Washington, D.C.

RETAIL

TOM C. SELLS, a graduate gemologist, has joined the staff of Amrhein's Jewelers, Brides & Formals, which operates stores in Roanoke and Salem. He will be located at the Ogden Road store but will have responsibilities in both stores as a diamond grader. Also, BRENDA B. BOWER, formerly director of retail services for Roanoke College, has been named director of operations/human resources for the company and will be located in the Salem store with responsibilities for both stores.

TOURISM

BETTY C. McKINNEY has been named Bedford area tourism coordinator. In her new position, she will direct the tourism marketing and promotion efforts for Bedford and Bedford County. McKinney recently was coordinator for the Bedford Area Community Certification Program sponsored by the Virginia Department of Economic Development and for the Tourism Accreditation Program sponsored by the Virginia Division of Tourism. She has more than 20 years of experience in marketing and public relations.
