PUPILS GET READING JUMP-START INCENTIVES|

The New River Valley's public libraries and schools are giving area children a jump start along the road to becoming better readers by encouraging them to visit the local public library.

Radford, Montgomery County and Pulaski County libraries have joined in the JUMPSTART program, sponsored by the American Library Association and The Prudential.

The libraries will soon distribute a Jumpstart newsletter to participating first-, second- and third-grade classrooms. The newsletter includes a temporary library card.

The children may exchange this card at the library for a permanent card and register to win prizes including a $50,000 college scholarship, Macintosh Performa computers, and sets of World Book encyclopedias.

Children who already have library cards may return the temporary cards to the library to register to win the prizes.

When the pupils return to school with their library cards, they may sign up on the Jumpstart poster in their classroom and get Jumpstart stickers.

For more information, call your local public library.

The Pulaski County High School VOCATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE was honored by the Virginia Council on Vocational Education for exemplary advice and assistance to vocational students.

Thomas Powers, a retired contractor and chairman of the committee, accepted the award at a recent ceremony in Richmond.

The committee serves as a link between students and the business and industrial community by providing scholarships, job placement, business partnerships, curriculum development and help in acquiring equipment and improving facilities.

The American Choral Directors Association has named MICHELLE LOOKADOO to the 1995 National Honors Childrens Choir.

She is one of only eight students in Virginia chosen to participate in the 200 member choir.

Michelle, a sophomore at Radford High School, is the daughter of Dan and Kay Lookadoo of Radford.

Artist Barbara Capps and the New River Arts Council are forming a CHILDREN'S ART CLUB for children ages 8-18 to learn more about art techniques, displays, and business dealings.

The club will organize meetings and classes and help children display their work in shows, competitions and galleries.

"Some of these kids have exceptional skills and they need and deserve recognition," says Capps.

Artwork created by area children is already on display in the lobby of Marshall Overstreet's The Sportscar Clinic on Franklin Street in Christiansburg. Gallery hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday - Friday. Admission is free.

For more club details, call Barbara Capps at 382-2397 before 9 a.m.
