TECH HIRES CARTER AS AN ASSISTANT AD

Former Virginia Tech football player Derek Carter will return to his alma mater as assistant athletic director for student life.

Carter, who worked in Tennessee's student life office for the past four years, replaces Vito Ragazzo, who retired in July. Derita Ratcliffe, a 1989 James Madison University graduate who is studying for a master's degree in clinical psychology at Tech, will assist Carter.

Carter had 10 interceptions as a Tech cornerback and helped the 1984 Hokies to the Independence Bowl. A Washington, D.C. native, he was a Tech football graduate assistant coach in 1988.

In other sports of the region:

Virginia leads second-place Virginia Tech by seven strokes after two rounds at the Kiawah Island (S.C.) Intercollegiate Golf Tournament.

The Cavaliers are at 565 after two rounds at the par-72 Osprey Point course. The 18-team competition concludes today.

Tech's Curtis Deal and Virginia's Simon Cooke are in a group of four tied for second. Deel and Cooke each totaled 140 and are five shots behind leader Trey Sones of Central Florida.

At Floyd, David McCall and Jared French each fired 3-over-par 39s Monday at Great Oaks Country Club to help Giles earn a 160-174 victory over Floyd in a Three Rivers District high school golf match.

McCall and French shared medalist honors with Leonard Rorrer of Floyd. Also for the Buffaloes, Kevin Blevins and John Wood shot 43 and Barry Largen added a 49. For Giles, Andrew Wagner shot 40 and Eddie O'Dell 42.

Ray Harrell and Tommy Lesperance shot even-par 36s at Countryside to earn medalist honors and lead Glenvar to a 151-206 Pioneer District match over Parry McCluer.

Nick Varney (37) and Brian Kaulback (42) rounded out scoring for Glenvar. For Parry McCluer, David Coleman shot 49, Jonathan Lauder 51, and Kevin Pryor and Zack Bice 53s.

At Pulaski, Cave Spring edged Pulaski County by three strokes to win a five-team Roanoke Valley District golf match at Thorn Spring Golf Club. Cave Spring totaled 324, followed by Pulaski County (327), Franklin County (332), Patrick Henry (358) and William Fleming (486).

Matt Gardner of Pulaski County shot 76 to earn medalist honors. Chris Davis added a 77, Ray Kirby 86 and Ryan Nunley 88 for the Cougars.

For the Knights, Chris Montgomery shot 78, Scott Bailey 79, Doug Kinney 81 and Ernie Cochran 86.

The Eagles were led by Chad Foutz with 77. Mark Baldwin paced the Patriots with an 82 and Thomas Salter shot 95 to lead the Colonels.
