The Upstairs Downstairs Boutique will open its long-planned coffee shop for the annual Oct. 15 event, and the Wedding Center will move to expanded quarters.
A pie-eating contest and a visit by crew members from a nuclear submarine named for Count Casimir Pulaski are among the activities the Pulaski Business Alliance has scheduled for the festivities.
Other possibilities, discussed during a Tuesday alliance meeting, include importing dance clogging groups from Galax to join others from the New River Valley, a doll and teddy bear show and a petting zoo. The Count Pulaski Day planning committee will meet at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Renaissance Restaurant to confirm as much of the schedule as possible.
``We tried to think of things that would appeal to all different types of people - all ages, different interests,'' said Debbie Jonas, owner of the Colony of Virginia Ltd. store. Jonas and Marlis Ryssel-Flynn, owner of Upstairs Downstairs, are leading the planning group.
They still are seeking representatives of area Boy and Girl Scouts to participate in flag ceremonies with local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, as well as Revolutionary War re-enactors. For more information, call Ryssel-Flynn at 980-4809 or Jonas at 980-8932.
Participants in Count Pulaski Day activities should return their applications by Sept. 23, so the schedule of events can be made final. Additional applications can be obtained from Jonas or Ryssel-Flynn.
Traffic will be stopped on a section of Main Street where the activities will be centered. Store owners will provide electricity for sidewalk concessions.
