CAVALIERS DOMINATE IN GOLF OPENER

Virginia opened its fall golf season with an eight-stroke victory over Virginia Tech in the Kiawah Intercollegiate tournament in Kiawah Island, S.C.

The Cavaliers finished with an 11-under-par 853 total on the par-72 Osprey Point Golf Course. The Hokies edged Coastal Carolina by a stroke for third.

Trey Sones of Central Florida was the medalist at 11-under 205, followed by Lewis Chitengwa (209) and Simon Cooke (210) of UVa. Virginia Tech's Brian Sharp tied for fifth at 212, and Curtis Deal was 10th at 213.

The Virginia men's soccer team brings a No.1 national ranking to Blacksburg today to take on Virginia Tech. The Cavaliers, who never have lost to a Tech varsity team, meet the Hokies at 4 p.m.

The Virginia Tech women's soccer team won a school-record sixth consecutive game, beating Radford 1-0 in Blacksburg. Freshman Rachel Hash scored for the Hokies (6-0) in the sixth minute on an assist from junior Michelle Todd. Radford is 2-2.

Heather Brown scored with 16 seconds left in regulation to give Lynchburg a 2-1 victory over Ferrum in Dixie Conference women's soccer.

Roanoke Valley Christian turned a 28-1 advantage in shots into a 4-0 victory over visiting Carlisle in the boys' high school soccer opener for both Virginia Independent Conference teams.

Jacob Jarrett shot 73 to earn medalist honors and lead Northside to an 11-shot victory in a Blue Ridge District golf match. The Vikings totaled 304 over the par-71 Hidden Valley Country Club course in Salem. Rockbridge County was second at 315, followed by Salem (320), Lord Botetourt (321), William Byrd (326) and Alleghany (345).
