BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech's Department of Music will present a faculty and guest artist recital Saturday at 8 p.m. in Squires Recital Salon. The concert will focus on the works of 20th century composers Patrick Simpson, Peter Schickele, Victoria Bond and Rebecca Clarke. All works on the program are duets.
Musicians featured at the recital are Doris Lederer on viola, David Jacobsen on flute, Clyde Shaw on cello, Trundy Muegel on vibraphone and Teresa Ehrlich on piano.
The piece by Patrick Simpson, Duo for Flute and Viola, is a world premiere and will open the concert. Simpson wrote it specifically for Lederer last fall. A full-scale chamber work in five movements, the composition has a lyrical style and continuing variation form.

Tech plant sale
BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech Horticulture Garden holds its annual grand giveaway and fall plant sale Sept. 23. The sale is 4-7 p.m., and the giveaway starts at 5:15 p.m.
Giveaway participants should bring their own trowels and boxes.
Many attractive and hard-to-find varieties will be available at the sale, which features stocks from three nurseries. Some sale proceeds support the Horticulture Gardens.

RADFORD - Radford Community Hospital is sponsoring a series of free safety awareness seminars. Safety professionals will cover personal safety, including some self-defense techniques, and home security.

New River Ramble
RADFORD - The third annual New River Ramble is Sept. 28, 5-8 p.m., at the Long Way Home Amphitheater on First Street.
Advance tickets are $16 per person through Sept. 23, and $18 after that.
This event is sponsored by Christiansburg-Montgomery County, Giles County, Pulaski County and Radford chambers of commerce for members of the local business community.

Community Group
BLACKSBURG - The Community Group is sponsoring "Visions of Our Valley," a community art display that focuses on the spirit and beauty of the New River Valley and its people.
The display will include an art show Oct. 1-21 and a festival Oct. 8 2-5 p.m. both at the Miller-off-Main Street Galleries on Wilson Avenue.
The group will also consider including other community events or expanding festival hours to accommodate performances.
Art must be received by 5 p.m. Sept. 24.

Greenway workshops
NARROWS - The National Committee for the New River and Partners for the New River will hold a second round of workshops on the proposed development of a Giles County-New River greenway.
Participants will address issues raised during the first round of workshops and identify potential greenway elements.

Eastern Elementary: Wednesday, 7-9 p.m.
Giles County High School: Sept. 22, 7-9 p.m.
Food sanitation
BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Cooperative Extension and the Virginia Department of Health will offer a 16-hour applied food-service sanitation course for food-service managers.
The course will meet Sept. 27 and 29 and Oct. 3 and 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center on the Virginia Tech Campus.
The registration deadline is Tuesday. The course fee of $90 includes a textbook, testing fee and certificate.
