DEPUTY PUT ON LEAVE AFTER ALLEGED ASSAULT

A Roanoke County sheriff's deputy has been put on administrative leave after he was charged with assaulting a female inmate, according to Roanoke County authorities.

Fred Jones, 60, was charged with assault and battery, a misdemeanor, on Monday. He was immediately placed on administrative leave with pay pending an internal affairs investigation, Sheriff Gerald Holt said.

The incident occurred Aug. 6 in the Roanoke County Jail, where Jones is a correctional officer, police said. The cell of a female inmate was entered and she was fondled, police said. They did not elaborate.

Holt called in Roanoke County detectives to investigate.

The inmate is serving 120 days in jail for two counts each of assault and battery and one count of petty larceny, Holt said.

Jones said he preferred not to comment until his preliminary hearing, which is set for Sept. 19 in Roanoke County General District Court.

Banks swore out a criminal summons on Monday.
