MAN GETS 11 YEARS IN PRISON IN ASSAULT OF POLICE OFFICER

Donald Glenn Law, 37, originally had been charged with attempted capital murder of Roanoke police Officer C.C. Perkins, but the charge was reduced to bodily injury of a law-enforcement officer.

Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Ann Gardner had asked that Law receive a maximum punishment of 21 years.

Earlier testimony has shown that Law was being sought by police the night of March 13 after he refused to go through a metal detector at a Northwest Roanoke nightclub and then brandished a handgun at the bouncer.

When police caught up with him a short time later at a home on Forest Park Boulevard, Law told Perkins he was armed and reached for a gun under his vest. At that point, Perkins grabbed Law and the gun was dropped during a struggle.

Law then grabbed Perkins' service weapon and pulled it almost entirely from the holster before backup police officers arrived and apprehended him.

Perkins testified earlier that when he later saw Law at the Police Department, the man told him: "You're lucky. I almost got you. I'll get you next time."

In addition to sentencing Law to 11 years for the attack on Perkins, Roanoke Circuit Judge Roy Willett gave him another year for the charge of brandishing a firearm.
