BLACKSBURG'S WHEELER HAS SURGERY

Blacksburg High School's Tony Wheeler, an All Timesland linebacker, underwent surgery Wednesday for a chronic right shoulder problem and will be lost to the football team for an undetermined length of time.

Blacksburg coach David Crist said Wheeler would likely be out for all of the regular season but could be healed in time to rejoin the team if the Indians make it to the playoffs.

A federal judge in Norfolk ruled Tuesday the Virginia High School League unfairly kept Lorenzo Thompson from playing football for Granby High School because of his age and ordered that the 19-year-old be allowed to play.

Roanoke opened its Old Dominion Athletic Conference field hockey season with a 3-0 victory over Sweet Briar. Christine Boyle, Ali Ogelsby and Jenifer Dempsey scored for the Maroons (2-0, 1-0). The Vixens fell to 0-2, 0-1.

Late Model Stock Car driver Todd Philpott has been suspended from Franklin County Speedway for the remainder of the 1994 season, promoter Whitey Taylor said.

Philpott and Donnie Plunkett were involved in a collision during a Sept. 10 race. Philpott and his crew members Duane and Kenny Hodges initiated a fight in the pits minutes after the crash.

Taylor suspended the Hodges for two weeks. Plunkett and his crew members were not penalized.
