FIGHT ENDS IN GUNFIRE

An argument that began in a Franklin County High School gym class escalated into gunfire Wednesday afternoon, sheriff's deputies said.

Franklin County Sheriff's Investigator C.R. Cundiff said he wasn't sure what the argument was about, but the two male students agreed to meet after school at the Rocky Mount Hardee's on Virginia 40.

Two cars carrying several teens met at the Hardee's but were chased away by the restaurant's security guard. The cars then went down the street to a Dairy Queen, where the argument worsened.

According to Cundiff, a 19-year-old male from one car and a 17-year-old male from the other car brought out guns.

About 3:45 p.m., the 19-year-old fired at the other car. No one was in the car and no one was injured.

Police arrested the 17-year-old, whose name was not released because he is a juvenile. Cundiff said he will be charged with brandishing a firearm and may face other charges.

Wednesday night, police still were looking for the 19-year-old, who fled Dairy Queen before officers arrived.
