Showcase of the Arts will begin Sunday

The League of Roanoke Artists' ninth annual Showcase of the Arts will be held Sunday to Oct. 2.

Area artists, 18 and older, will be eligible for more than $2,000 in cash and art supplies.

George Chevatel, retired art professor at Emory and Henry College, will judge the competition. Call 774-2757 or 384-7448.

Folklife Festival to be held Saturday

The 18th Annual Vinton Folklife Festival will be held in Vinton on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Vinton War Memorial Grounds. Traditional music, crafts, food, living history exhibits and children's activities will be featured.

In cooperation with the festival, the Star Quilters Guild Craft Show will be held at the Vinton Senior Center on the War Memorial Grounds. The show will feature over 100 quilts, a quilt supply area, and demonstrations. A $1 donation is requested for admission to the quilt show only.

Several music groups will perform at the war memorial stage, including: Dry Hill Draggers; Inheritance, Robin and Linda Williams; Larry Sigmon and Barbara Poole. Kathy Coleman, an Appalachian storyteller, and the Brown Family Square Dancers will also perform.

Volunteers for adult education needed

Blue Ridge Community Services Adult Education Program at Virginia Western Community College is seeking volunteers to teach life skills to adults with mental retardation.

The 10-week session will be held Tuesday evenings beginning Sept. 20.

Classes cover topics such as daily living skills, academics and the arts. Call 342-6003.

Women's group installs new officers

Rhoda Woodson was recently installed as president of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Blue Ridge Post 484.

Other officers for the 1994-95 term are: Renva Wilson, senior vice president; Virginia Bower, junior vice president; Ann Saunders, chaplain; India Harris, guard; Ola Shortt, conductress; and Ruth McGlothlin, secretary and treasurer.
