STEAM EXCURSIONS SET FOR OCT. 8-9

Three steam-powered excursion trains will operate over the scenic lines of the Norfolk and Western Railway on Oct. 8-9 in conjunction with the Roanoke Railway Festival.

The Class J, Number 611, will power the excursions, which are sponsored by the Roanoke Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. Many of the cars featured in the train are coaches built in 1949 for the N&W's famed streamliner ``The Powhatan Arrow'' and have been restored to their original appearance.

On Oct. 8, the 611 will power two round-trip excursions from Roanoke to Walton. The morning trip will depart at 8:30 a.m. and return at 12:30 p.m. The afternoon trip will leave at 2 p.m. and return at 6 p.m. Fares are $45 for adults, $36 for children under 12.

An all-day package for both trips cost $74 for adults, $59 for children under 12.

An all-day trip to Bluefield, W.Va., will depart on Oct. 9 at 7:30 a.m., returning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $82 per adult, $62 per child 12 and under.

Trains will depart from the lower level of the former N&W passenger station in Roanoke, located on Shenandoah Avenue in front of the former Hotel Roanoke.
