HOTEL BUYS MUCH LOCALLY

Western Virginia businesses got contracts worth $1.3 million this week when vendors were selected to provide furnishings for The Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center. The $42 million facility is scheduled to open April 3.

Doubletree Hotels, the Phoenix company that will operate the facility, said Thursday it has spent $1 million with Virginia companies on furnishings for the hotel. Also Thursday, The Hotel Roanoke Conference Center Commission awarded contracts for another $206,158 to Roanoke Valley companies for items in the meeting facility.

Furnishings for the hotel's 319 rooms and 19 suites will come from:

Sam Moore Chairs Inc. of Bedford.

Mario Industries Inc. of Roanoke.

American of Martinsville's contract division in Henry County.

Lees Commercial Carpet in Glasgow.

Also winning hotel contracts were King Koil Mattress Co.'s Norfolk plant and Virginia Quilting Co. Inc. of South Hill.

Doubletree negotiated the hotel contracts privately with vendors as representative for the Virginia Tech Real Estate Foundation Inc., the hotel's owner. Items for the conference center, which is owned by the city of Roanoke, were advertised publicly for bidding and vendors were selected based on the lowest bid.

Five Roanoke Valley office supply companies, a Roanoke lighting company and a Christiansburg lighting company got contracts from the commission. The Roanoke companies and their awards were:

Harris Office Furniture, $137,068.

Design Business Interiors, $65,725.

Barrows Inc., $23,882.

Office Suppliers Inc., $19,744.

Williams Supply Inc., $12,826.

State Electric Supply Co. of Christiansburg got a contract for $44,620.

Virginia Quilting of South Hill also has a contract with the conference center for $12,676 worth of draperies.

The commission also approved additional construction costs of $11,625 for flagpoles.

Items still to be bought for the conference center include artwork and accessories, conference chairs, some sofas and tables and operating equipment and supplies.
