FATHER IS SHOT, KILLED DESPITE SON'S PLEAS

A 10-year-old boy begged three gunmen not to kill his daddy, offering $2 of his own money, but they brushed him off and killed his father.

``I don't want your money, kid,'' the boy quoted one of the gunmen as saying.

Police said they had no motive in the slaying early Wednesday of Kevin Evans, a 32-year-old rap musician known as K.E.

The family was awakened shortly after midnight by the sound of a car horn, and Evans went outside and was confronted by the gunmen, authorities said. The men forced Evans back inside with his wife, son and 6-year-old daughter.

``Please don't kill my daddy. I have $2 on the dresser. You can take that,'' pleaded the boy.

But the men ordered Evans' wife and children to leave the room, police said, there was a struggle and numerous shots were fired.

Lightfoot said he would not challenge Barry because ``if I were still in the mayor's race I believe people would think I was doing things for partisan politics reasons.''

`` If that were the case, it would make it that much more difficult to pass a budget that serves our citizens,'' he added.

Lightfoot, a successful lawyer, was the first independent to win a citywide election when he joined the D.C. City Council in 1988.

``I am delighted that Mr. Lightfoot agrees with me that this city is too polarized and is in need of healing,'' said Barry, commenting on Lightfoot's withdrawal.

``I am hopeful that he will join me in helping to bring about hope, healing, recovery and restoration of our city and its people,'' added Barry, who won the primary despite failing to carry the city's predominantly white and wealthier areas, where there was a nearly 60 percent turnout.

Barry served as mayor of the nation's capital from 1979 to 1991. He did not seek re-election after being convicted of a misdemeanor cocaine offense. He won a seat on the city council in 1992 after serving a six-month prison sentence.

Lightfoot's decision pits Barry against Republican nominee Carol Schwartz, a former D.C. Council member, in the November election.

``I welcome a one-on-one rematch with Mr. Barry, but this time I look forward to a different result,'' said Schwartz, who lost to Barry in 1986.

The United States is pressing Vietnam to turn over more documents and to locate more witnesses who might shed light on the fate of the missing, said sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The United States lists 2,229 Americans as unaccounted for from the war, including 1,639 in Vietnam, 505 in Laos, 77 in Cambodia and eight in China. Half the total number were killed in action and more than 400 others were lost at sea.

Barry defeated incumbent Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly and Ray in a landslide in Tuesday's Democratic primary.
