`BAYOU BREAKDOWN' FEATURES ZYDECO

Zydeco music fans can get their fill Sundays, 8-10 p.m., when Virginia Tech's student-run WUVT (90.7 FM) airs "THE BAYOU BREAKDOWN" with host Audrey Anne Sukacz. Inspired by some live zydeco performances during her time as a blues DJ, the Washington native decided to look into it further. "The energy was incredible," she relates.

"Woovit" has a fairly good zydeco collection, she said, "and I play it all," occasionally filling in with some "swamp blues."

Sukacz makes a distinction between Cajun and zydeco, noting the latter has some Caribbean, African and blues influences. But accordians and fiddles are prominent in both forms.

Performers the listeners are likely to hear include Beau Jocque and Boo Zoo Chavis, "a long-time carrier of the torch," Sukacz said. The "King of Zydeco" was Clifton Chenier, a post World War II performer whom she called "the first person to make zydeco popular as dance music" and among the first to record it.

She welcomes requests at 231-9888.

"The Armchair Quarterback," Saturday mornings at 9 on WFNR (710 AM), has been expanded to a full hour. Listeners can call in questions and comments about area sports to sportscasters John Beamer and John Hale as well as M.J. Dougherty of the Roanoke Times and World-News. Levi Garrett is the host.
