BYRD CAPITALIZES ON GLENVAR ERRORS TO NOTCH 16-7 WIN

William Byrd scored 16 unanswered points in the second half - all off Glenvar turnovers - as the Terriers defeated the Highlanders 16-7 in a non-district high school battle Friday night at Glenvar.

Barry Myvette rushed for 161 yards on 24 carries, including a 65-yard run for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the game away. The Terriers (2-1) took the lead when English returned a fumble 41 yards for the score.

Glenvar (1-1) outrushed Byrd 164-148, including 100 yards by Eric East, but the Highlanders fumbled three times - two of those by East.

Lord Botetourt 37

James River 13

BUCHANAN - Wesley Cox, a transfer from James River, rushed for 261 yards on 23 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Cavaliers to victory against their county rivals.

Cox scored on runs of 8, 57 and 11 yards as the Cavaliers took advantage of second-half turnovers to pull away.

James River (0-3) fumbled a pitchout which Erik Erickson scooped up and ran 26 yards for a touchdown, and the Knights mishandled a snap on a punt that led to another Lord Botetourt touchdown. The Cavaliers scored 23 second-half points despite getting just three first downs.

Rocky Lark added 57 yards and had a touchdown for the Cavaliers (1-1).

James River quarterback Travis Blankenship, a sophomore, completed 10 of 13 passes for 132 yards and scored on a 3-yard touchdown run. Shahan Burrell had 82 yards and scored on a 28-yard run for the Knights, and John Pearson ran for 46 yards and caught four passes for 61 yards.

Halifax 7

William Fleming 3

The Colonels (0-3) scored on their first possession and then never threatened again as the Comets won the low-scoring non-disctrict contest at Victory Stadium.

Halifax (2-1) scored the winning touchdown with one minute, 34 seconds remaining in the third quarter when Detrius Medley's 30-yard scoring run capped a 7-play, 60-yard drive.

On Fleming's first possession, Phillip Barrett broke a 56-yard run to the Halifax 10. When the drive stalled, Garrett Lancaster's 23-yard field goal gave the Colonels the lead.

After Halifax's score, Fleming turned to its passing attack but was thwarted by interceptions on its final two possessions - both of them by Halifax's Michael Chappel.

Lynchburg's E.C. Glass visits Victory Stadium next Friday for a game against Fleming.

Rude had his second 100-yards-plus receiving effort in as many games, catching eight of Johnson's throws for 107.

The Eagles (1-2) tried to mount a late rally in the fourth. They got to the Heritage 29-yard line, but with 15 seconds left, K.C. Hancock threw a pass that was intercepted by the Pioneers' Jimmy Anderson to end the threat. Franklin County's starting tailback Tony Muse has been suspended for the rest of the year for unspecified reasons.

Shawsville 13

Craig County 7

NEW CASTLE - The Shawnees rallied from a 7-0 halftime deficit to get their first victory of the season.
