FERRUM RALLY FALLS SHORT

Ferrum's late comeback bid ran out of time Saturday afternoon as the Panthers dropped a 17-14 decision to Cortland State.

With Ferrum (1-2) trailing 17-12, the Panthers' defense stiffened and forced the Red Dragons (2-1) to punt from deep in their own territory with 22 seconds left in the game. Cortland State elected to take a safety, rather than risk a blocked punt that could produce a touchdown.

Ferrum's John Poindexter returned the ensuing free kick 44 yards to the Red Dragons' 25-yard line.

Quarterback Millard Vining connected with freshman tight end Travis Clarke on a 7-yard pass over the middle, but the Panthers had no timeouts left and were unable to get off another play.

Ferrum had an opportunity to score just before the safety. After John Hannah picked off a pass at the Panthers' 31 with 7:23 left in the game, Ferrum drove to a first-and-goal at the Cortland State 7 with 3:01 left but lost 5 yards on the next four plays to give the Red Dragons possession.
