MADISON FALLS IN FINAL MINUTES

Avrom Smith rushed for 195 yards and two touchdowns Saturday to lead New Hampshire to a 27-24 victory over James Madison in a Yankee Conference football game.

With New Hampshire trailing 24-21 late in the fourth quarter, Smith ran 29 yards to the James Madison 1-yard line to set up the winning score by senior fullback Lee McClinton. McClinton's score with 1 minute, 35 seconds remaining gave the Wildcats (2-0 overall, 1-0 Yankee) a three-point cushion.

James Madison (2-1, 0-1) engineered a drive in the closing minute, but John Coursey's 40-yard field-goal attempt missed with eight seconds remaining.

Smith, a senior tailback, scored his first touchdown on a 2-yard run early in the first quarter and added a second score with 8:53 remaining before halftime, giving New Hampshire a 14-0 lead.

With 7:03 remaining in the second quarter, the Dukes rallied behind quarterback Mike Cawley, who cut New Hampshire's lead to 14-7 on a 41-yard run. Cawley passed 240 yards and ran for 113 yards.

New Hampshire's Matt Mezquita made it 21-7 after a 15-yard pass from quarterback Jim Stayer with 2:01 left in the half. JMU went ahead 24-21 on a 19-yard scoring pass from Cawley to Macey Brooks, Coursey's 24-yard field goal and a 1-yard touchdown by Cawley with 3:29 remaining in the game.

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Shawn Knight completed 15 of 19 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns as the Tribe held off the Paladins.

Troy Keen rushed for 170 yards and a touchdown to help keep William and Mary's record perfect, at 3-0.

Knight completed nine of 10 passes in the first half for 131 yards and a touchdown as the Tribe opened a 14-6 lead.

Furman quarterback Philly Jones was forced out in the third quarter with a wrist injury.

Sophomore Braniff Bonaventure led the Paladins (1-2) on a 12-play, 86-yard drive, scoring on a 24-yard run.

Furman went ahead 20-14 on an 11-play, 97-yard drive culminating with Leonardo McClarty's 4-yard run.

William and Mary took the lead for good on a four-play, 63-yard drive capped by Knight's 2-yard keeper.

Knight threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jay Hamrick to give the Tribe a 28-20 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

STORRS, Conn. - Brandon Bailey passed for a touchdown and ran for another in his first start at quarterback as the Huskies downed the Spiders.

Ed Long became UConn's career rushing leader, carrying the ball 21 times for 139 yards, including a 37-yard run late in the fourth quarter that capped the scoring and put the game out of reach for Richmond (2-1, 0-1).

Long now has 2,335 yards, eclipsing the 2,327 amassed by Vin Clements from 1968-70.

Bailey, a transfer from West Virginia, ran for 59 yards as Connecticut (1-2, 1-0) outgained Richmond 267-128. His 12-yard run made it 22-8 in the second quarter, and a 3-yard pass to Heath Walker made it 29-8 just before the half.

An 87-yard touchdown pass from Joe Elrod to Antoine Lee, 1 yard short of Richmond's pass-play record set in 1970, made it 29-15, and Minoso Rodgers ran 1 yard for another score.

UConn regained a comfortable lead when Long broke free at the Richmond 37 to make it 36-21 with 4 minutes left to play, and then held the Spiders on their final possession.

TOLEDO, Ohio - Wasean Tait rushed for 164 yards on 18 carries and scored three touchdowns as the Rockets doused the Flames.

Toledo (2-1) rolled up 346 yards on the ground. Tait scored on runs of 6, 7 and 11 yards.

Antwan Chiles completed 31 of 55 passes for 385 yards for the Flames (1-2), who had three receivers with more than 100 yards.

Emory & Henry 47, Bridgewater 6: In Emory, Steve Smith ran for 88 yards on 15 carries with one touchdown, and the Wasps' defense held the Eagles to fewer than 100 total yards in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Emory & Henry (2-0, 2-0) rushed for 287 yards. Smith finished the Wasps' scoring on a 37-yard touchdown run with 5:12 left in the game.

Bridgewater (0-2, 0-1), which had 77 yards rushing and 15 yards passing, scored its only touchdown with 8:50 left in the game on a 21-yard run by Heath Horton.

Emory & Henry led 34-0 at halftime.

Glenville St. 47, Newport News Apprentice 16: In Glenville, W.Va., Scott Otis threw six touchdown passes, including three to Walter Wilbon as Glenville State defeated the Builders.

Glenville State (2-0) led 21-7 at the half and never trailed. Otis threw touchdown passes of 12, 9, 21, 8, 47, and 31 yards. The transfer from West Virginia was 20-of-29 passing for 265 yards with no interceptions.

Glenville State's Chris George caught 10 passes for 100 yards and one touchdown of 8 yards. He also ran back a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown.

Clinch Valley 38, Hampden-Sydney 12: In Wise, David Nara threw for 314 yards and three scores, and ran for a fourth to lead the Cavaliers past the Tigers.

Nara completed 13 of 21 passes, including scoring passes of 80, 15 and 8 yards. Clinch Valley (2-0) gained 160 yards rushing, including 99 yards on 23 carries by Greg Thomas. Thomas scored on a 4-yard run, and Nara added a 1-yard scoring run.

Hampden-Sydney (0-2) gained 187 yards on the ground. Robert Thompson had 118 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries.

Catholic 25, Randolph-Macon 18: In Washington, senior defensive back John Butler broke up a fourth-and-goal pass with nine seconds left in the game to give the Cardinals a victory over the Yellow Jackets.

Catholic (2-0) opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Matt Taylor, giving the Cardinals a lead they would not relinquish.

Taylor rushed for 75 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. Freshman quarterback Kevin Ricca was 13-of-20 for 154 yards.

The Cardinals forced five turnovers, including interceptions by Butler, defensive end Joe McKenzie and defensive lineman Rick Smith.

The Yellow Jackets (0-1) were led by quarterback Drew Bush, who completed 18 of 37 passes for 223 yards.

Norfolk St. 42, Fayetteville St. 14: In Norfolk, Aaron Sparrow threw for 341 yards and four touchdowns as the Spartans defeated Fayetteville State in the CIAA.

Sparrow was 19-for-32 with two interceptions as Norfolk State (2-1, 2-1) rolled up 408 yards in total offense. Sparrow threw scoring passes of 4, 6, 19 and 45 yards to tie a school record for touchdown passes in a game.

Virginia St. 13, N.C. Central 10: In Durham, N.C., Rodney Granger Jr. threw a 28-yard scoring pass to Darren Thornton late in the third quarter, and the Trojans held off the Eagles in CIAA.

Virginia State (2-1, 2-1) took the lead after Dexter Walker picked off a Brad McAdams pass at the North Carolina Central 46 and returned it to the 9. Robert Thornton scored on a 9-yard run with 10:01 left in the half for a 7-3 lead.

Hampton 56, Virginia Union 6: In Richmond, Malcolm Benson rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns, and Darrell Flythe had 114 yards and two scores as the Pirates thumped the Panthers in the CIAA.

Hampton (3-0, 2-0) scored 46 points in the first half as Flythe scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards, and Benson on runs of 4, 5, and 67 yards. Virginia Union (0-3, 0-2) got its only score on a 76-yard run by Bobby Phillips.
