BYRD HANDS BASSETT 1ST SETBACK 69-57

William Byrd knocked Bassett from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 69-57 win over the Bengals in a non-district girls' basketball game Saturday night on the Terriers' floor.

Byrd (4-2), which suffered early foul problems to its frontcourt, got a boost from Nicki Sarver, who scored five points off the bench in the second quarter.

Valerie Glynn picked up the scoring slack in the second quarter by scoring nine of her 13 points, including a long 3-pointer as the Terriers took a 36-27 halftime lead.

Bassett (5-1), Timesland's fourth-ranked team, came back behind Kim Hairston, who scored a game-high 27 points. The Bengals outscored the Terriers 17-12 in the third period but faded in the fourth as Byrd hit 8-of-10 free throws.

Cathy Smith scored 10 of her team-high 18 points in the final period. Kelli Runyon scored 11 for Byrd.

Heather Burke had 13 points for Bassett.

STAUNTON - Beth Corbin had 23 points and Kelly Simmons had eight points in the decisive third quarter as Lee defeated Lord Botetourt in a non-district game.

Robert E. Lee-Staunton (5-0) led 21-13 at the end of the first quarter and took control by outscoring the Cavaliers (5-2) 17-12 in the third.

Simmons finished with 15 points and Jenni Corbin added 16 for the winners.

Sarah Hicks led Lord Botetourt with 19 points and Sara Moore added 14.
