CHRISTIANSBURG - The New River Valley Cooperative Extension and the Virginia Natural History Museum will sponsor a Save Our Streams training workshop Saturday, Oct. 1, at 8:30 a.m.
The workshop trains individuals or groups to adopt a stream and test water quality and record stream life.
The topics include watersheds, non-point source pollution, erosion, land use, organism identification and scientific method.
School teachers may use the workshop for continuing education credit.
To register send a $7 check made out to the Montgomery County 4-H Fund to: Montgomery County Extension Office, P.O. Box 90, Christiansburg, Va. 24073.
The registration deadline is Sept. 29.

textiles recycling
BLACKSBURG - The Town of Blacksburg has established a textiles recycling drop-off site in the Public Works Lot of the industrial park.
Items to be recycled must be placed in special textiles recycling bags available from the recycling office in the Municipal Building. All other bags left at this site will be disposed of as trash.
Textiles recycling is for moderately worn items and out-of-season clothing that may be used as rags.
Do not include carpet, plastic or excessively worn, molded and wet items.

NRV Spelling Bee
BLACKSBURG - Employees from 17 local organizations will compete Friday, Sept. 23, in the second annual New River Valley Spelling Bee.
John Carlin, Roanoke WSLS-TV Channel 10 co-anchor, will serve as master of ceremonies.
The event, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Montgomery County, will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Custom Catering. The public may attend to cheer favorite teams. Lunch will be available for $8 per person.
Proceeds will support literacy initiatives in the New River Valley.
