ALLEN HONORS STATE GAMES ATHLETES

Leonore McDaniels and James Kiser will be honored today in Richmond by Virginia first lady Susan Allen as the Commonwealth Games of Virginia athletes of the year.

McDaniels, 66, of Virginia Beach, didn't start competing in track and field until she was 59 years old. She owns three age-group world titles and won four gold medals in last year's World Veterans Championships in Japan.

Kiser, 47, of Manassas, has been a wrestling, basketball and track coach for 20 years. The Beville Middle School guidance counselor starts each day with 2,500 sit ups. He has won eight gold medals and a silver in track and field and powerlifting since the Games began in 1990.

``Virginians can be exceptionally proud to be so well-represented,'' said Tom Osborne, executive director of the National Congress of State Games.

A Virginia Amateur Sports committee selected McDaniels and Kiser from among eight finalists.

``It was a joy because of what they represent but a challenge because there were so many outstanding athletes,'' VAS president Pete Lampman said.

Criteria included participation, sportsmanship, effort and positive attitude.
