Byrd (5-2) jumped out to a 29-10 first quarter lead thanks mainly to Smith who scored 18 in the quarter.
But in the second quarter, Martinsville (4-1) came back. The Bulldogs used their pressure defense to outscore the Terriers 27-8 to tie the score at 37. Trecita Holland scored 12 of her career-high 34 in the quarter to help the Bulldogs come back.
In the fourth quarter, though, the Bulldogs star guard Samantha Ferguson, who scored 14 points, fouled out with about four minutes left and Martinsville never recovered.
Byrd got an unexpected contribution from Brandy Allen who scored 16 points. Byrd improves to 5-2 while Martinsville falls to 4-1. These two teams played again next Monday.

The Governors (3-2) got 14 points from Jessie Beaver including four 3-pointers - all in the third quarter - and 10 points from Quakeela Miles.
