Nunn backs Robb for re-election

NORFOLK - Less than 24 hours after returning from a high-stakes diplomatic mission to Haiti, Sen. Sam Nunn, D-Ga., came to Virginia on Monday night on a political mission.

Nunn attended a fund-raiser in Virginia Beach, then held a news conference in Norfolk, where he endorsed Sen. Charles Robb for re-election.

The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee said he is proud to serve on the panel with Robb, a fellow Democrat.

``He is devoted and dedicated to protecting Virginia's interests in that committee,'' Nunn said, calling Robb a man with ``both commitment and credibility.''

Nunn said he traveled to Virginia because he believes the Virginia Senate race ``is one of the most important things going on in the election this year.''

Robb thanked Nunn for his support and called him ``the most respected man on Capitol Hill.''

In another development Monday, Robb began running his first television ads for the fall campaign. One of two 30-second spots says Robb is ``facing the toughest election of his career'' and seeks to burnish his image as someone who has the ``courage and independence to do what's right.''

The ad says Robb ``called for tough measures to help reduce the deficit'' and was out in front ``on issues like enforcing the death penalty and supporting a woman's right to choose'' an abortion.

The other ad touts Robb's record on education.

Man shoots deputy, apparently kills self

WOODSTOCK - A Shenandoah County deputy was wounded early Monday in a shootout by an assailant who was wounded by the officer's return fire and then apparently shot and killed himself, the sheriff said.

Deputy David Mason, who was shot in the leg and groin area, was in satisfactory condition Monday night at Winchester Medical Center after surgery, Sheriff Marshall Robinson said.

Robert Nevin Dallam Jr., 41, of Herndon, was declared dead when he arrived at Shenandoah County Memorial Hospital, Robinson said.
