Apple festival

CHILHOWIE - The 42nd annual Chilhowie Community Apple Festival is underway in Smyth County this week through Sunday, with different events each day.

The annual parade at 10 a.m. Saturday will feature Jerry W. Kilgore, state secretary of public safety, as parade marshal. Kilgore is from Scott County, where he served as assistant commonwealth's attorney for two years before becoming assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District from 1986 to 1991.

Occupational therapy talk

What's the future for occupational therapy and its suppliers after health care reform? This question will be addressed Thursday by Mary M. Evert, president of the American Occupational Therapy Association, in a talk at The College of Health Sciences in Roanoke.

Her appearance will be part of a fund-raising dinner that costs $6 and begins at 6 p.m.

Evert is an adjunct associate professor in occupational therapy at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Date rape play

WYTHEVILLE - Offstage Theatre will perform ``But I Said No,'' a play about acquaintance rape, at 11 a.m. Wednesday and 12:15 p.m. Thursday at Wytheville Community College in Grayson Hall Commons. Admission is free.

The cast interweaves stories in which individuals are forced into sex with a friend, relative or date. Language is explicit and not recommended for children.

The 55-minute play was written four years ago by actress-writer Margaret Baldwin and University of Virginia playwright Doug Grissom, who founded Offstage Theatre. It was created in response to a request from the Sexual Assault Resource Agency in Charlottesville and has been seen by more than 12,000 people on college campuses around the country.

Fall festival

MOUTH OF WILSON - The 18th annual Grayson Highlands Fall Festival will be Saturday and Sunday in Grayson Highlands State Park, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. the first day and noon to 6 p.m. the second day.

Sponsored by the Rugby Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department, the festival features bluegrass, old-time and gospel music, as well as arts, crafts and a pony auction. Ponies found grazing wild by the Wilburn Ridge Pony Association in the state park or surrounding Jefferson National Forest will be auctioned at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Food will be sold, and the park's picnic areas, visitor center and hiking and bridle trails will be open. There is a $2 parking fee.

The park is in Grayson County on U.S. 58 between Independence and Damascus. 579-7092.
