Tech plant sale

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech Horticulture Garden holds its annual grand giveaway and fall plant sale Friday. The sale is 4-7 p.m., and the giveaway starts at 5:15 p.m.

Giveaway participants should bring their own trowels and boxes.

Many attractive and hard-to-find varieties will be available at the sale, which features stocks from three nurseries. Some sale proceeds support the Horticulture Gardens.

Safety awareness

RADFORD - Radford Community Hospital is sponsoring a series of free safety awareness seminars. Safety professionals will cover personal safety, including some self-defense techniques, and home security.

Five sessions are scheduled:

Monday in Blacksburg.

Tuesday in Christiansburg.

Sept. 28 in Radford.

Oct. 4 in Hillsville.

Oct. 6 in Floyd.

New River Ramble

RADFORD - The third annual New River Ramble is Sept. 28, 5-8 p.m., at the Long Way Home Amphitheater on First Street.

Advance tickets are $16 per person through Friday, and $18 after that.

This event is sponsored by Christiansburg-Montgomery County, Giles County, Pulaski County and Radford chambers of commerce for members of the local business community.

Community Group

BLACKSBURG - The Community Group is sponsoring "Visions of Our Valley," a community art display that focuses on the spirit and beauty of the New River Valley and its people.

The display will include an art show Oct. 1-21 and a festival Oct. 8 2-5 p.m. both at the Miller-off-Main Street Galleries on Wilson Avenue.

The group will also consider including other community events or expanding festival hours to accommodate performances.

Art must be received by 5 p.m. Saturday.

Renaissance music

BLACKSBURG - The Renaissance Music Academy of Virginia, a nonprofit local music academy, has added instruction in flute to its program. Geared toward serious music students, the school also offers studies in piano, cello and violin.

Eligible applicants for the Christmas Store must be permanent residents of Montgomery County, meet 125% of the Federal Poverty Income Level guidelines, have children under 18 living in the home, or be at least 64 years old.

Winning designers

BLACKSBURG - A design team of four Virginia Tech freshman engineering students won second place in the first National Design Competition by designing an opening and closing device for a child-proof medicine bottle. The team members were Robert Capuano of Centreville, Jeffrey Cullina of Fairfax, Susan Heilich of Radford and Paul Ridenour of Gaithersburg, Md.,

The students developed their design as a part of their Engineering Fundamentals course. The design solution, called the Culpuanourich Medicine Bottle Opener, required a written report describing the steps used to complete the design as well as engineering details and assembly drawings.

Each design team member will be awarded a copy of AutoCAD-Release 12, AutoVision, and AutoCAD Designer, software valued well above $1000, on the commercial market.

The competition was sponsored by the Engineering Design Graphics Division, the Freshman Programs Division, and the Design in Engineering Education Division of the American Society for Engineering Education.

Approximately 50 entries were received in the national contest, held at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Education conference

WYTHEVILLE - An adult education conference - "Appalachian Living and Learning" - will be held Friday, Sept. 30, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Wytheville Community College.

Current students, former adult education students and those considering entering an adult education program are invited to attend.

Student presenters include: John Lawson, employee of Eastern Ridge Lime; Paul Broyles, employee of Hoechst-Celanese; and Kellie Rorrer , New River Community College student.

The seminar, as well as lunch and entertainment, by Chris "Cat" White and Steve Sams, is free. Registration is required.

The conference is sponsored by the Appalachian Regional Commission, Western Highlands Regional Literacy Coordinating Committee and the Regional Adult Education Program at New River Community College.

Basic welding

DUBLIN - A basic welding class will be offered at Pulaski County High School, Thursday, Sept. 22, 6-9 p.m. in the agriculture education shop.

The class is open to adults interested in instruction in arc and oxy-acetylene welding and cutting.

The fee for the 15 sessions is $25.00, to cover the costs of consumable materials.

Enrollment will be on a first come first serve basis. The meeting night will be scheduled after the first session.
