MAN CHARGED IN BURGLARY, RAPE ATTEMPT

Roanoke County police have charged a 37-year-old Northwest Roanoke man with breaking into the home of a 40-year-old woman, handcuffing her and trying to rape her.

John Wesley Campbell of the 3700 block of Wilmont Avenue Northwest was arrested immediately after police searched his home and found several of the victim's items in his residence. Police confiscated almost 20 articles in the September 14 search, which they say may lead to additional felony charges against Wesley.

A search warrant affidavit filed in Roanoke Circuit Court alleges that Campbell is the man who broke into a south Roanoke County home about 1 a.m. September 5 and attacked a woman. Police would not elaborate on how the intruder got into the home, which was locked.

The victim said she awoke and saw a man standing over her. She recognized the man's voice and identified it as Campbell's. According to the search warrant affidavit, Campbell had attempted to date the victim throughout the preceding year.

The man handcuffed the woman, placed duct tape over her mouth, tried to rape her and sodomized her. When the woman tried to break free, he repeatedly threatened to kill her.

After the incident, the man showered and forced the woman to shower. He left and told her not to move until daylight.

During the search of Campbell's home, police found a roll of duct tape, a pair of handcuffs, and documents with the victim's name on them.

Campbell is being held in Roanoke County Jail without bond on felony charges of forcible sodomy and of attempting to commit rape after breaking and entering into a home. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 26.
