Pence, owner of Pence Insurance Agency, was named Life Underwriter of the Year. She has held offices in the organization since 1980, most recently leading the Life Underwriters Political Action Committee for the past three years. Assaid was given the Outstanding Service Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the success and growth of the association. The Equitable Life Insurance Society representative recently was chairman of the membership committee. In this period, the Roanoke association finished first in the nation in its size category for new membership growth.
The association also received awards for the largest number of members and contributions in the state.
HANK HUTCHERSON, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.K. Hutcherson of Roanoke and assistant actuary with Home Beneficial Life Insurance Co. in Richmond, has been named a fellow of the Society of Actuaries.
Hutcherson is a 1988 graduate of the University of Virginia.
DONALD F. CLEMENT of Roanoke has been named an investment executive at Ferguson, Andrews & Associates in Roanoke. He was recently president of ABBA Financial Consulting in Roanoke and previously was an executive of Reserve life Insurance Co. in Dallas and Tillinghast Inc. in Atlanta.
THE ADVISORY BOARD OF THE RADIO ADVERTISING BUREAU in New York has named radio account executives Dave Babcock, Liz Carroll and Charlene Watson-Scott as radio marketing associates. The three recently completed an intensive six-week course and scored well on the final examination.
KEN WOODS, safety coordinator in the Salem plant, has been selected as Sybron Chemicals Inc.'s Employee of the Month. He received this award for his outstanding efforts in documenting data revealing a decrease of unsafe conditions at the Salem facility.
Woods has worked at Sybron Chemicals Inc. since 1993.
JAIME BANNWART has been named employee of the Year for 1994 by Brandon Oaks, a life-care retirement community sponsored by Virginia Lutheran Homes Inc.
Bannwart is resident program coordinator and also oversees the operation of transportation services for residents.
DREW KERSHAW, president and chief executive officer of Connex Pipe Systems in Troutville, recently was named to the board of directors of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association International.
MARTIN BROS. CONTRACTORS INC. in Roanoke recently was awarded construction contracts totaling $2,047,200. The contracts are for renovations of the existing Elizabeth Arden plant in Roanoke, the Carilion Salem Center and the Grand Pavilion in Roanoke, which is for the new offices for Grand Piano and Furniture Co.
GAIL LaMAR recently was elected president of Longwood Chapter of American Business Women's Association. She has served as vice president, secretary, business associates night chairman and women of the year.
Other elected officers are Jean Vest, vice president; Gloria Brauch, secretary; and Terri Delbridge, treasurer.

KENNETH E. WIDENER, field representative for Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society, recently received two awards during the 44th annual convention of the National Association of Fraternal Insurance Counsellors. He received the Three-Year Quality Award and Million-Dollar Production Award, based on 1993 production.
DURWARD WARREN OWEN, son of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Owen of Roanoke, has received the Evin C. Varner Award from the College Fraternity Editors Association and the Distinguished Service Award from the Fraternity Executives Association.
Given annually, the Varner Award recognizes the fraternity, sorority, professional or honor society member who has worked over a period of years for the betterment of that system, especially in communications.
The Distinguished Service Award is given annually to individuals who have exhibited years of meritorious service to the fraternity world.
Owen is chief executive officer of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, headquartered in Charlotte, N.C.
DR. JITENDRA S. DESAI, medical director at Lewis-Gale Psychiatric Center, recently received board certification in adolescent psychiatry from the American Board of Adolescent Psychiatry.
