UNITED WAY ACHIEVEMENTS CITED

Eleven businesses and organizations conducted "Pacesetter" campaigns for United Way of Roanoke Valley this summer, raising more than $355,000.

Pacesetter campaigns are conducted to jump-start the traditional fall campaign. The amount raised was 15 percent above projections.

Participating organizations and amounts raised include: Advance Auto Stores, Inc., $111,695; Allstate Insurance, $61,502; American Red Cross, $14,437; Davis H. Elliot Co. Inc., $3,494 though the campaign is not yet over; First Virginia Bank-Southwest, $18,966; and Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern, $27,324.

Others include: L'Eggs Products Inc., $13,614; Roanoke Electric Steel Corp., $31,026; Roanoke Times & World-News, $55,025; United Central Labor Council, $4,207; and Vitramon-Roanoke, $13,764.

Advance Auto had a $35,000 campaign increase, the largest of the Pacesetter organizations. The Roanoke Times & World-News had the highest average employee gift - $191.06.

Earlier this month, the United Way began working with 15 "loaned employees," who will work for the agency's annual fund-raising campaign. Employers of these loaned workers will continue to pay the salaries.

The loaned employees are:
