Special education

RADFORD - The Radford Church of God in Christ will host "Working Together in Special Education," a free workshop for parents of special education students Saturday, Sept. 24, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The workshop's topics include parents' rights and responsibilities, parent resource centers and transitions from school to work.

Fall Clean-Up

CHRISTIANSBURG - Fall Clean-Up has been set by the Christiansburg Town Council for Oct. 3-Oct. 14.

During Fall Clean-Up, residents needing special trash pick-up must place the materials to be picked up with their garbage on their regular pick-up day.

Extra materials, with the exception of construction materials, heavy machinery and appliances, will be picked up by special trucks. Loose materials, such as cold ashes, must be placed in some kind of container no larger than 32 gallons in size.

Loose leaves, tree limbs and trimmings must be piled at the edge of the street right of way for efficient pick up and must not be in excess of four inches in diameter. Residents should not to block any drainage ditches. During the clean-up period there will be no charge for pick up of tree limbs and trimmings.

Residents are urged to take their recyclable glass, aluminum and paper to the nearest collection point. Copies of recycling center locations may be obtained at the Municipal Building.

A free "Start Thinking - Stop Littering" motor vehicle litter bag may be picked up at the town treasurer's office, Chamber of Commerce and the Montgomery County library.

Lectures on violence

RADFORD - Margaret Mohrmann, a noted expert on violence against children and an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Virginia, will speak on the topic - "Violence and the Victimization of Children", Monday, Sept. 26, 8 p.m., Radford University, Preston Auditorium.

Mohrmann will also speak at St. Albans Psychiatric Hospital, Tuesday, Sept. 28, 10 a.m. She will discuss "Violating Those Whom We'd Protect."

The public is welcome to both lectures, which are free.

The lectures are part of the "Understanding Violence" lecture series, sponsored by Radford University, St. Albans Psychiatric Hospital and the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy.

AAUW Days

BLACKSBURG - The American Association of University Women will hold its AAUW Days, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. each day at Bonomo's, University City Boulevard.

The annual event supports the Educational Foundation. The foundation provides funds to advance education and research, foster equity and self-development for women and support positive change in society.

Blacksburg Branch members will welcome people to Bonomo's - provide information on the organization, sell pecans, calendars and maple syrup.

Bonomo's will contribute a portion of it's profits from the two days.

Last year the Blacksburg Branch donated $1500 to the Foundation's Eleanor Roosevelt Fund, which awards fellowships to outstanding teachers who have shown a commitment through their teachings to create educational equity for girls.

White Cane days

BLACKSBURG - The Blacksburg Lions Club will conduct its White Can" solicitation, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

Proceeds will go to the Old Dominion Eye Bank and other Lions sight and hearing conservation projects and community charities.

Lions members will have eye-donor cards and will accept old eyeglasses for reprocessing.

Newbern fall festival

NEWBERN - The Newbern Original Fall Festival will be held Saturday, Oct. 8.

The event, sponsored by the Olde Newberne Foundation, will feature booths offering demonstrations and sales of cottage produced handiwork.

The highlight of the day will be the making of apple butter at Newbern United Methodist Church.

Booths for vendors are free and will be located along Newbern's historical roadway.
